1996 CJRL CHAMPIONS!

SUPER KINGS

Super Kings photoThe Super Kings, owned by the husband and wife team of Art and Kathy Johnson, finally took the CJRL title in 1996. One of the original eight CJRL teams, the Super Kings have been close before. At the end of the 1991 season, the Super Kings were tied with the DNT's for first, only to lose on the tie-breaker. In 1993, they finished second by six points to the Ladykillers.

The Super Kings have come a long way from the team that drafted Ken Oberkfell during the first CJRL Auction Draft in 1990. However, it is questionable whether or not they have come far enough from the team that picked up and then waived Chico Walker over and over and over again during that first season. In fact, the Kings motto during that first season was "Chico been bery, bery good to me". The Super Kings have also become known around the CJRL for their love of players on the Los Angeles Dodgers. The reason for this is unknown, as Art and Kathy are both die hard New York Yankee fans.

That championship season did not start out very well for the Super Kings. As of the CJRL first stat report on April 19, the Kings were in ninth place. However, they inched up each week, to sixth place the following week, and to third place as of May 2. They remained in third for another week, then reached second place on May 16, 10.5 points behind Art and Kathy's daughter Joanne Rogers of Hayley's Heroes. After gaining three points on the Heroes in a week, the Super Kings still remained in second place. Then on May 30, the Super Kings reached first place for the first time that season. Hayley's Heroes retook first place the following week, but then on June 13 the Super Kings reclaimed first place and never looked back.

The Super Kings were dominant in pitching that season, and were pretty good in the offensive categories as well. The following is the Super Kings ending roster for the 1996 season:
