South East Melbourne began its title defence by cruising by Perth. Magic import Brian Tolbert celebrated his NBL debut by plundering the Wildcats for a game-high 22 points and six assists while South East Melbourne's interior defence restricted former Newcastle pivot David Van Dyke to nine points in Perth uniform. He was shackled by Magic centres Chris Anstey and John Dorge, who combined for 30 points on 12-for-18 shooting and 13 boards.
