Illawarra 96 - NEWCASTLE 112

Former Melbourne rivet Dave Simmons defied his reputation as non-scorer to chart a team-high 22 points to go with 10 boards as Newcastle edged Illawarra. "It's been a while since I scored 22, probably a training session with the Tigers," Simmons said. "I've been working very hard on my offence, because that's what the Falcons expect from me. The beauty of this team though, is that we don't depend on any player scoring, and that showed tonight. I'm very happy to get the win, because the young guys have been working hard, and it's good for them to get results for their work."

Illawarra: Ritter 25, Johnson 23, Saville 16, Zauner 14, Edwards 9, Campbell 7, Cooks 2.

Newcastle: Simmons 22, Jensen 20, McGregor 17, Melmeth 16, Hays 16, McLean 11, Blake 6, Pepper 2, Robertson 2.
