"The race is in my lane." This is the motto of the high school girls' track and field team that I coach. Nonrunners (i.e. those who wear No Fear and Chump Wear shirts) see it as arrogant. Though its language seems to exclude field events, it was inspired by a keynote speech given by Olympic throwing great Al Oerter as he spoke about athletes who concentrated on their competitors vs. those who focussed within themselves.
