* * * Both Men and Women Gain "Experience" at Regionals * * *

We knew going in to the Regional competiton that it would be difficult to finish much higher than 15th for the girls. On a good day (all running the season best or better) the men could have possibly been 12th. But this meet is fierce. You have to realize you have the top 16 teams from the entire Southwest Region of the State. Needless to say, we found out quickly that is takes lower times, usually 2-3 men in the 16:00's and 2-3 in the 17:00's to run with the big dogs. For the girls, we'll need 2-3 running in the 20:00's and 2-3 running in the 21:00's or low 22:00's to consider State next year.

All that aside, the Regionals provided a very necessary ingredient for our "young" athletes: experience. You just can't describe the "feeling" of Regionals or State. You have to experience it. We need to actually "get used to" that feeling, so it's not as tense. Since most of the runers for both girls and boys are returning next year, the "end of season goal" doesn't need to be "getting to Regionals". That should be an expectation. Next year's goal should to be to place in the top 2 at District and top 10 or better at Regionals. It's far too early to say top "4" which is a ticket to the State Meet. A great deal of "off season" running will determine that.

I purposely did not single out any given athlete for this final article. I feel all our runners deserve equal praise for their efforts at this race. There certainly were some "ups and downs" in performance, but that's expected at this race. What got Wayne H.S. to this level was "team effort". So this article will end the season on that note. Maintain your focus next season on the "team" aspect of this sport. That's what will possible get you to the State meet.
