1998-99 EFHL Newletter #8

December 14, 1998

Sorry this is so late (by my standards). Unlike Chris' late football newsletters, by the time a late hockey newsletter gets to you, the results for the current week could already be decided. Charlie ends up cruising to an easy period victory with the top score for the week of 38. He won it by 16 over Rick and 23 over Tony. The next period goes through January 12. Here were the leading scorers for the period.

To get this I set up a spreadsheet to calculate each player's points per week. I will e-mail this to you as part of the stats in the near future.

Here are the scores.

Brett 38 - Grant 32. Brett gets a big win led by 7 points from Forsberg. At 3-5, he remains in fourth place in the Medicine Hat division but stays within range of the rest of the division. Even with the loss, I am reasonably happy with where my team is at right now. After a so-so period, I am still the points leader. Also, even if it is short terrm, it can't hurt that Selanne is back on a line with Kariya and Sakic has been put on a line with Forsberg. We will see what happens with Renberg. Now I just have to hope I can get a few more points from my goalie.

Mike 27 - Chris 14. Mike ends his 3 game losing streak. Interestingly enough, he only got points from 6 of his 11 players as 5 guys went pointless, including 3 forwards. Chris tanked big time in his effort to win the period. However, he seems to have rebounded quite well against me this week in the battle for first place in the Medicine Hat division.

Rick 30 - Jay 26. Zhamnov had the week of his life for week (10 points) for Rick. Now would be a good time to drop him because you won't see that again anytime soon, if ever. Rick didn't get much else in his futile attempt to win his 10th period.

Tony 34 - Bill 15. Tony was led by Tkachuk with 7 points. Newly acquired Sheppard chipped in 5. For Bill, the good news is that for the first time in 3 weeks, his forwards outscored his defensemen. The bad news is that is was only 7-6.

Charlie 38 - Rich 33. All right, Nedved looks good now. He led Charlie with 7 as Charlie wins his first period. Prediction: Nedved will be off Charlie's roster by the end of the season, either due to injury or because he sucks. I will say that he seems to be in a good situation with the Rangers, but the honeymoon may not last. He definitely needs skilled players around him to be successful. Rich was led by Hasek with 9 points. The great thing about Hasek (besides the fact that he is the best goalie in the world) is that he plays all the time. Not many goalies would play in all of their team's games in a four-game week.

In the near future, probably at the end of the current period, maybe a little sooner, I will do a midseason analysis of each team. In the meantime, if you are in Chris' football league, make sure you talk about how great the hockey auction was so we can have a football auction (assuming that you want one.) I need something to change my luck in that league.
