It is essential to remember that the steeplechase is first and foremost an endurance race and that no amount of technical expertise can compensate for the lack of a good endurance base (flat running ability). In other words , as some of the Kenyan runners have shown us - there are no points to be gained for technical merit or artistic impression - first past the post is the winner.
