ROBSON - I'LL TAKE IT

Bobby Robson has declared today that he'd love to manage Newcastle
United should the job be offered to him
The former England manager today admitted he would accept the job if asked, which
would be a huge challenge with Newcastle languishing just goal difference off
the bottom of the Premiership.
Robson, 66, said: ''If the board of Newcastle United saw me as a prime candidate all
I can tell you is yes I would be interested in speaking to them and would think carefully about
the opportunity to come to Newcastle. It is Sunday and I haven't spoken to Newcastle
United and Newcastle United haven't spoken to me. We haven't had any dialogue
at all and that's the truth, it's all speculation.
''If they saw me as a candidate I would relish talking to Newcastle United. I am not too old,
I am in good health, I would like to go to Newcastle, the job wouldn't worry me.
I would like to continue to work, I can handle the job. In view of all those ingredients. I
have terrific ambition and motivation. I would take the job if it came my way.''
Speaking for Sky Sports One was asked if he saw himself as a desk-bound manager. ''No
I wouldn't. I would propose to Newcastle what I felt the role should be. I see myself
as a field coach and manager. I worked with players every day at PSV Eindhoven.
My job is not to be in the office, my job is to be with players on the pitch.''
Robson, though, would not be drawn into talking about the Shearer situation.
''I don't want to get into the Shearer situation. I see Alan as a top class England international
centre-forward and that is what Newcastle would want primarily from him.'' Asked if
he could handle the pressure from the media that engulfed Gullit, Robson said
: ''Try working in Barcelona. I had 50 journalists every day, not five, not 15. That
was before training and it was every day. I have been in pressure jobs. There
was pressure at Porto, Sporting Lisbon, Eindhoven and so was the England job.
I've been in pressure jobs. I have experienced that all my life. I can handle it. With
my energy, my fitness, my ambition, to be number one, working at the sharp
end, this is the job I am looking for.''
