Dell Jinx continues
as Newcastle crash.... again.
Southampton
4........
Kachloul '57, '67
Pahars '66
Hughes '78
Newcastle United 2
Shearer '22 (pen)
Speed '85
It all
started well enough. 20 minutes in Ketsbaias lofted pass found Solano,
who neatly
cheasted the
ball into the path of Kieren Dyer, who in turn burst forward into the box
only to be
clumsily brought down by Saints defender Claus Lundekvam. And of course,
up
stepped Alan
Shearer and smashed it home. Just... The goalkeeper went the right way
and
got a hand
on it, but Shearers spot kick was too powerful.
Then
it all started to go wrong for Newcastle. At half time, a moment of genius
from Southampton
manager Dave
Jones. On came Stuart Ripley for Soltvedt, and he played the game of his
life.
With
59 minutes gone Ripley somehow found room for the cross, and Moroccan Kachloul
was the end
of it to level the scores.
8 minutes later it was Ripley again. His long, searching ball found Pahars,
who punished
the hesitant
Karelse, making his debut in goals for Newcsatle after signing from Dutch
side NAC Breda
last week.
And
only a further 2 minues had passed before it was 3-1. Another long ball
found it's way
to Kachloul,
who thumped home his second.
Newcastle
did have a few chances in the second half. A Solano cross was inches too
high for
Shearer, who
still managed to get his head on it, but couldn't keep it from going over
the bar.
79 minutes in and it was again Stuart Ripley who was the architect. Yet
another long ball
into the box
was again not dealt with by the Newcastle defence, and they were punished.
The
ball was knocked
down for Mark Hughes, who thumped a cracker of a volley into the top corner
of Karelse's
goal, leaving the keeper with no chance.
Newcastle
did get a late consolation 5 minutes from time, but it did little to lift
the gloom. Solanos
corner found
the head of Gary Speed to make the final score 4-2.
