Where Now?

                       Tottenham              3....
                           Iverson '28
                                        Ferdinand '45
                                        Sherwood '61
                       Newcastle United     1
                           Solano '16

Newcastle crumbled to their second defeat in three days when they self destructed against
a determined Tottenham side. They got off to great start when the electric Nolberto Solano landed
a peach of a low 18-yard drive just inside Walker's right-hand post after 16 minutes following
a breathtaking run across the edge of the area. But the gifted Peruvian, who went close to
adding a second soon afterwards, eventually faded - and summed up his side's frustration
with a booking for kicking the ball away at a free-kick.
After Spurs leveled from the head of Steffan Iverson, Newcastle never looked in
the game, and Spurs dominated with their new signing from Liverpool Oyvind Leonhardsen,
and the growing influence of Darren Anderton.
In first half stoppage time, Taricco swapped passes with Sherwood and Iversen before
delivering a perfect low cross into the six yard box for Ferdinand to deftly steer past
Steve Harper. The only bleak note for Spurs was that it was the last contribution by the
injury-prone Ferdinand who had damaged a knee in an earlier collision with Harper whose
bravery had prevented a certain goal.
Ruud Gullit needed to inspire his magpies. Instead, it was Spurs who played the better
football in the second period, and former Blackburn man Tim Sherwood put the result beyond
reasonable doubt just after the hour mark. An inch perfect set piece from Anderton
found the head of Sherwood who nodded home for 3-1.
Alan Shearer, meanwhile, could only stand and stare from afar for long periods at another
Newcastle under-achievement. The £15m England captain, sent off for the first time in his
career in Saturday's home defeat by Aston Villa, had another misery match and only
twice did he look like scoring.
His marvellously improvised hook shot sailed inches over the angle of far-post and crossbar
in the first half after Spurs keeper Ian Walker dropped Warren Barton's deep cross when
colliding with team-mate Chris Perry. And he was ruled offside when netting from close-
range just as he was about to celebrate his relief in cutting Tottenham's 3-1 advantage late on.
