Bobby
Robson blasted FA officials tonight after seeing his side throw away first
half
domination
to draw with Everon at St. James' Park. Newcastle had played there just
48 hours earlier
against FC Zurich in the UEFA cup, and the game was originally
scheduled for
the next day, Monday. But Everton and the FA claimed that players
needed as long
as possible to prepare for next weekends Battle of Britain, the
EURO 2000 qualifier
between Scotland and England.
Newcastle started
the game in top form, after going the last four games unbeaten,
and a
comprehensive 3-1 defeat of Zurich.
Everton hardly
had a look-in in the first half, and Newcastle were guilty of not killing
the game off
before the interval.
Duncan Ferguson
started his first game alongside Alan Shearer under Bobby Robson's
management,
and proved a threat throughout the 85 minutes he was on the field.
He had to wait
just four minutes for his first chance, rising well to meet Didier Domi's
cross from
the left but planting his header straight at Paul Gerrard.
The Scot went
even closer with eight minutes gone when Nolberto Solano's ball
into the box
was deflected into his path by David Unsworth and he crashed a left-
foot shot just
wide of the far post. Dabizas forced Gerrard into another save three
minutes later
after Domi lifted the ball into the penalty area, but Domi had to be
on his guard
at the back when Kevin Campbell finally beat the offside trap, the
full-back heading
back to Steve Harper.
United were
in complete control and Lee tested the Everton keeper with a 30-
yard drive
on 20 minutes. Gerrard kept his side level on the half-hour when Shearer
burst clear
of Richard Dunne from Solano's ball over the top, but the keeper blocked
well to deny
him a 14th goal of the season.
Dabizas produced
a brave header to prevent Campbell getting in an effort on goal 10
minutes before
the break, but Ferguson went close again for the home side on 40
minutes when
he sent in a delicate chip which was only just too high.
The Magpies
started the second half like they did the first, and Gary Speed earned
a
penalty just
one minute after the restart. Some slick passing from Newcastle put him
through on
goal, and Everton keeper Paul Gerrard brought down the Welshman
for a penalty.
Alan Shearer stepped up and cooly slotted home his 18th goal for club
and country
this season.
But by this
stage the Geordies were tiring, and Everton started to get back into the
game.
With their
best move of the game Nick Barmby crossed for Kevin Campbell to head home,
and the points
were shared.
There were
a couple of late chances for the magpies, the closest being Kevin Gallacher
-
still looking
for his first goal for the club - hitting the post from outside the box,
but all in
all another
one that got away.
