How Far Can We

Newcastle cruised
into the third round of the UEFA Cup tonight after surviving an early
scare against
FC Zurich at St. James' Park. Gocha Jamarauli put the visitors in front
after only
16 minutes, although South African internation Shaun Bartlett claimed it
at the time,
it was later seen that he hadn't got a touch to Jamaraoulis' long ball,
which
went straight
into the back of Steve Harpers net.
But Silvio
Maric's equaliser 12 minutes before the break got the ball rolling, and
two
goals within
three minute from Duncan Ferguson - his first since his debut double
on November
28 last year - and Gary Speed secured the victory.
And in truth
if it had not been for the efforts of Zurich keeper Marco Pascolo, who
denied
Nikos Dabizas
three times in quick succession, the scoreline would have been
much more impressive.
On 33 minutes
United won a free kick just outside the box, which any of a number of
Newcastle players
could have put in the net. Gary Speed and Nolberto Solano stepped
over it before
Alan Shearer thumped it into the underside of the crossbar, which fell
for a ridiculously
easy goal for Silvio Maric, who nodded into the empty net from little more
than a yard
out.
Shortly after
the break it was 2, after Big Dunc tapped in a simple finish after Nol
Solano
chipped the
keeper.
Gary Speed
killed off the tie 3 minutes later in a move which is becoming a bit of
a tradition
now a day.
Nolberto Solano put in the corner and Gary Speed rose brilliantly to power
home
his header.
