Central midfielder Christian Bassedas secured his dream 3.5 million move to Newcastle in May 2000, after earlier negotiations in February had hit a financial snag. A full Argentine international, Bassedas should not have work permit problems being of dual nationality with an Italian passport. 
  Has made more than 300 appearances for Athletico Velez Sarsfeld, the club he joined as a boy, and has picked up winner’s medals in four league championships, the Americas Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and Recopa in Japan. Played for the Argentina under-23 side which won the Pan American Games title in 1995, and in the 1996 Olympic Games.
  Bassedas has signed a five year deal, and is settling on Tyneside with wife Maria and nine month old son
Franco.
