Nikos Dabizas

Dabizas caught the eye of Kenny Dalgliesh in the Champions League, who then signed him for what he said was a bargain £1 million in March 1998.
A no-nonsense type player, Dabizas has become a real favourite with the St. James' park faithful. He became the first Greek ever to play in the FA Cup final when Newcastle lost to Arsenal in 1998, and hit the bar with a header when Newcastle were down 1-0.
When Dalgliesh signed the Greek international he said "He's only 24 yet he's got a wealth of experience. He's won 20 full caps and he's played in the Champions League. He's essentially a central defender but he's also comfortable at the centre of midfield. An English player with his credentials would cost us £4m-£5m."
