Sam Bell Maxey
1825-1895

In 1861 Sam Bell Maxey, a graduate of West Point, was given authority by the War Department of the Confederate States to raise an Infantry Regiment, the 9th Texas Infantry. It was organized from Companies raised from Northeast Texas on November 4, 1861. With Sam Bell Maxey as their Colonel, the 9th was mustered into Confederate Service on December 1, 1861.

On March 4, 1862 Colonel Maxey received a promotion to Brigadier General in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States of America.

After the war, he served two terms as a U.S. Senator.

In 1895, veterans of the 9th Texas were honored to march in his funeral procession as were an Honor Guard of U.S. soldiers.

The funeral in Paris, Texas, is now an annual event with the procession marching from his home to his final resting place.
