Alice Cooper - The Real King of Rock

Forget Elvis Presley, Alice Cooper
is the REAL King of Rock. A great entertainer who not only performs
great songs but also accompanies this with a horror themed stage show. There are many conflicting stories about how
he chose the name Alice Cooper, some of the most ludicrous ones made up by the
man himself. At one time he claimed he chose the name because a woman
who’d been messing with the Ouiga Boards told him that, in a former life, he’d
been a 16th Century witch called Alice Cooper.
The story he tells today is a lot more believable. Apparently his
original band were looking for an outrageous name so they adopted the name
Alice Cooper. The kind of mental image they had when they heard the name was of
a seemingly cute and innocent girl brandishing a deadly weapon with intent.
Vince Furnier didn’t plan to be called Alice Cooper, he’d always intended to be
known by his real name. When the band
started performed under the new moniker people saw Vincent Furnier as the front
man and just assumed that Alice Cooper was his stage name. As people started
calling him “Alice” he decided not to fight it and adopted the name for
himself.
You just have to look at people
like Marilyn Manson and Kiss (both superb acts in their own right) to see how
much of an influence Alice has had on the industry. After years of battling
alcohol addiction his latest vice is seems quite tame in comparison. He’s
addicted to golf, which isn’t the kind of thing you would expect from a guy who
strangles nurses with his straight jacket on live shows. J
The only annoying thing about him is that, now is that he’s a practicing
Born Again Christian, a few (but not too many) of his later songs get a bit too
preachy for my tastes. Saying that I’ve seen him live twice (both very recent)
and he doesn’t seem to have toned down his stage act at all. Seeing Alice
Cooper in concert is an awesome experience and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it
to fans who haven’t got round to doing it yet.
