Black Dragon Isshinryu Karate Dojo®

The meaning behind the Black Dragon symbol

The Black Dragon logo was designed by former Black Dragon student Sensei Steve Holy. Now the head instructor of his own dojo, Guardian Dragon Dojo .

The dragon comes from the name of Isshinryu founder Tatsuo Shimabuku. Tatsuo meaning dragon boy.  The dragon is black in honor of Master Joe Smith who was African-American, studied under Grandmaster Shimabuku and founded Isshinryu in Central Illinois .  The tail of the dragon encircles a yin/yang the symbol of life.  This represents how we should embrace life.  The oriental characters in the tail spell out Isshinryu Karate Do.  The cross obviously represents Christianity and how it is apart of everything we are and do.

The Black Dragon Isshinryu Karate Dojo name and logo are registered and Copyrighted to Dan Jones, founder of the Black Dragon Isshinryu Karate Dojos.
