Active Duty Navy I served five years on active duty as a Nuclear Submarine Officer in the Navy (May '85 to May '90). I was permanently assigned to the following commands:

Obviously, the majority of my active duty time was spent on board the USS Tunny. It was quite an experience to live and work under the sea. The job is quite difficult for non-submariners to appreciate. The work was extremely mentally and physically (through extremely long hours) demanding. The level of responsibility attained at a young age is almost unparalleled (e.g., I was in charge of a $300 million Nuclear Power plant at the age of 22). Because it was so very unique an experience, it is increasingly becoming a time of sentimental value to me. There are two web sites that I am aware of which help me to re-live life aboard the Tunny:

Navy Reserve From 1990 until the present, I've been in the US Naval Reserve. I am presently (and will forever remain) at the rank of Commander.  After completing 20 years of qualifying service in 2005 (thus qualifying for a pension), I chose to cease drilling so I no longer participate in Navy activities on weekends (or at any other time).
