Eric's Interests and Activities Page

Charities -- This is one of my top priorities and is one of the most significant ways that I measure my worth to mankind. For information on the charities that I support with time or fundage, see Eric's Charity Page.

Cooking -- I like to cook. My cuisine is of a uniformly healthful nature. Check out Eric's Cooking/Eating Page.

Dancing -- I enjoy ballroom dancing. I've taken classes in ballroom dancing at the University of Michigan and at Duke University.

Financial issues -- Check out Eric's Financial Page.

Genealogy -- I've recently really gotten into genealogy. I've made huge breakthroughs by making use of the resources of the Mormon church's Family History library. Here's my very own family tree!

Navy Reserve -- I am a Lieutenant Commander in the US Naval Reserve. I am in a Submarine Battle Group Staff unit. This requires me to participate in Navy activities for one weekend per month and a two-week active duty period each year. I was recently selected for promotion to Commander, effective some time in the summer of 2000.

Participatory Sports/Athletics -- This is an important one -- see Eric's Sports/Athletics page.

Reading -- I presently regularly fully read the daily Washington Post, as well as the monthly Consumer Reports, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and I just discovered Scientific American. I don't read many books these days both due to a lack of free time and to a decreasing attention span (yes, I am becoming a part of the "TV" generation). However, I am currently reading The Complete Sherlock Holmes, a compendium of A.Conan Doyle's Holmes works.

My favorite authors are Ernest Hemingway (fiction), H.G. Wells (Sci-Fi), A. Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes), Mark Twain (humor/americana), Tom Clancy (adventure), and John Irving (fiction). The best place to buy books inexpensively is probably DoubleDiscount.com.

Spectator Sports -- I am a big-time University of Michigan Football fan (and have been since about 1972). More recently (since about 1991), I've become just as rabid a Duke University Basketball fan. Things have gone pretty well this year for me in the recent past in this area. In 1998, the Michigan football team won the Big Ten championship, won at least ten games, and won their bowl game, all for the second consecutive season. Duke's basketball team has dominated the ACC the past three seasons. They were in the national championship game in April '99 (but lost to an inspired UConn). They won their third consecutive regular season championship in the toughest basketball conference in the country. Unfortunately, after the season, they lost three underclassmen to the NBA and a fourth underclassman to transfer. Combined with the graduation of two seniors, that means only three scholarship players will return next year. That's the bad news. The good news is that we have an awesome recruiting class, including two high school national players of the year. For the latest Sagarin Computer rankings in both football and basketball, go here.

Television -- My favorite television shows of all time include The Twilight Zone, M*A*S*H, Cheers, St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, The Wonder Years, Star Trek - The Next Generation, Seinfeld, the Simpsons, Friends, and E/R. I certainly watch too much TV and am trying to lessen the amount of TV that I do watch. My current favorites also include just about anything on the Discovery Channel or the History Channel, and Ally McBeal.
