Who (or What) is God?
It seems that everybody has a slightly different idea of who (or what) exactly God is. One thing is, however, certain: Man created the very idea of gods.
In the days of the cavemen, there was very little understanding of natural phenomena such as thunder, lightning, earthquakes, birth, and death. It was a very frightening existence for basically bright individuals who were simply ignorant of the "laws of nature" that we now take for granted.
In order to try to explain these natural phenomena that were otherwise unexplainable at the time, the cavemen invented a concept that seemed to be able to explain anything that they otherwise could not understand. The concept of gods was invented.
Gods were early on thought to be beings who looked and basically acted like creatures familiar to early man. Gods were thought to look and act like men or like animals familiar to man, or sometimes a combination thereof. The difference between a god and a man was that a god could do things that man could not. Gods could cause thunder and earthquakes and birth and death. The notion of gods allowed man to enforce a sort of order on his existence. A world with gods made sense, while a world without gods held questions and mystery.
Once man had invented gods to explain natural phenomena, he tried to manipulate the gods to result in desirable results for himself. This was the birth of religion.
Do I believe in God?
Well, I find no reason to believe in the kind of a God that most people do. Again, the very concept of gods was clearly invented by man and I see no reason to believe that any popular god ideas are anything but an invention of man.
That said, I still believe in God. But the God that I believe in doesn't seem to intercede in the affairs of the world. The God that I believe in is whoever, or whatever caused the universe to begin. Something must have caused the "big bang" to begin. Whoever or whatever caused that -- that is the God that I believe in. But I have absolutely no reason to believe that this force/entity has ever interceded since then in the affairs of the three-dimensional physical universe that we live in.
I intend to, in the future, elaborate on why alleged "miracles" and other such "proof" of existence of an active God is, in fact, not proof to the objective, knowledgeable observer.
