Eric's Fateful Canoe Trip Page

This page is under construction

This page is intended to chronicle a fateful Canoe trip that 15 souls experienced in the summer of 1984.  The expedition was an annual feature of Boy Scout Explorer Post 1338 in Detroit, MI.

The intended route: The trip was in Ontario, Canada. It began in the city of Mattice (which is roughly halfway between James Bay and Lake Superior). The trip would follow the Missinaibi River northeast to the Moose River, continuing northeast to Moosonee, which is at the southernmost tip of James Bay.

The participants:

William C. "Bill" Gleason (trip leader)

Derek Blount

Bobby Broddus

Spence Chinavre(sp?)

Michelle Cotter

Joe DeBacker, Jr.

Eric E. Haas (me)

Here's a book describing the canoe route.

Here's an outfitter's description of the intended route.

Here's a log of a trip on the same river in 1992.

Here's an article about a boy scout troop doing exactly the same trip.
