Ugonna Onyekwe
6-8 PF, FR from Nigeria, and Mercersburg Prep Academy in Pennsylvania
Onyekwe is a highly regarded basketball recruit who should make an immediate impact for the 49ers upon his arrival for the 1998-1999 season. “He’s very athletic,” says his Mercersburg coach, Tony Tucker. “I can’t imagine there being an any more athletic player at his size in high school this season.”
6-7 SR SF: Not as tall or physical as billed, but much more highly-developed as a bb player than I had been led to believe, this kid should step right in and start for Long Beach State and start frightening people by the end of his FR year. Very quick, speedy and athletic, with a solid midrange J and handle and a good understanding of the game. He averaged 14.4 ppg, 11.4 rpg and 4.0 bpg here. (Credit to Mike Miller WCH)
Charles O’Neal
6-2 1/2 PG, JR from Florida CC
Charles O’Neal signed with the 49ers a year ago, however, had not yet enrolled at the university, which caused Morgan and staff to sign him once again. The 6-2 1/2 guard from Florida CC in Jacksonville, Florida led FCC to the championship game of the 1997 Florida State JC Tournament. He is a true point guard who was seventh in the state in assists in 1997 (5.6 apg), and fourth in steals, at 3.0 per game.
Ramel “Rock” Lloyd
6-4, SG, JR Syracuse Transfer
Followed Coach Morgan from Syracuse. One of the nation’s top recruits coming out of Cardinal Hayes HS in 1996, Lloyd averaged 4.6 ppg and 11.8 minutes as a freshman. He should be one of the top performers in the Big West when he debuts during the 1998-99 season.
