BRIAN LUTZ: I’m going to start off by saying, "Go Leafs."
EDGE: Yeah, go Leafs. I am a Leafs fan, but the New Jersey Devils are my team. The Leafs run a close second. I catch a lot of heat for that in Toronto when I wear my Devils jersey around, but I’ve got to be me.
BL: Well, we’ll tell Carl DeMarco (President, WWF Canada) that you’re a Leafs fan.
EDGE: (laughing) Well, I am, but the Devils are No. 1.
BL: So, congratulations on the Intercontinental Title reign.
EDGE: Yeah, it was short-lived, but it was still fun. I did it at home in the SkyDome which was a really good time. A lot of the family, friends… everyone was there. It was definitely a good experience. One of those things as a kid that you actually dream about, and then when it comes true, it’s actually cool when it’s realized.
BL: Cool. So, what’s next? Are you and Christian going for the tag team gold?
EDGE: Yeah, it looks like Christian and I are aiming our sites on the tag team belts. We’ve come close… I mean, we’ve fought every set of Tag Team Champions over the last year, but we’re always the bridesmaids. I think eventually it’ll pay off.
BL: We’re here at Madison Square Garden, where you made your Pay-Per-View debut a year ago. Thoughts?
EDGE: You know, sometimes I look at it, and I’m like, "Wow, it’s already been a year." And then other times, that match seems like it was a long time ago, and it’s only been a year. So, in some respects it looks like it’s gone by like a flash, while other times I’ll think about certain aspects of the last year, and it seems like a long time ago.
That was my first Pay-Per-View. I’ve had a lot since, a lot of matches that I’ve been real happy with. Our last SummerSlam, when Christian and I did the marathon tag team match, I was real happy with that. There have been a lot of really good experiences, and that’s what I’ve always wanted. To be here, doing what I want to do, I can’t ask for anything else.
BL: Yeah, along with Shane’s match, a lot of people thought that your match stole the show. At least, that’s what the buzz was on the Internet.
EDGE: Hey, cool. I’m not exactly computer literate, so I’m never on the Internet. I don’t know if I’d have the time, actually! I want to make time eventually. If that’s what they’re saying, then great.
BL: You’re actually one of the favorites of the Internet. There seem to be a crew of guys that they’re really into, and you seem to be one of the heavy favorites.
EDGE: You know, it’s weird. I never really pictured guys getting into my character, or getting into Edge, and the fact is that really they have. When you do autograph sessions or personal appearances, it’s not just little girls. There are guys there, and usually they respect what you do in the ring, which is a really cool thing. Growing up, I watched guys like Shawn Michaels and Curt Hennig, guys like that that could really go in the ring. If people look at me in the same way, and I don’t know if they do, but that would be really nice if guys can say, "Hey, that guy can wrestle."
BL: You seem to have fit in well here. The WWF is the young company, and I’m not just spewing rhetoric here.
EDGE: It’s definitely true.
BL: On the Internet… in the arenas… the reaction that you’ve been getting is huge.
EDGE: At first, I don’t think people knew how to take me, or what my character was. I didn’t really know in the beginning either. It’s kind of been a work in progress. I think once someone gets comfortable with a character and how to act out there, and what feels right, I think the people realize that too and can react and relate.
BL: How do you think you’re developing now that your role in the Brood is done?
EDGE: I guess the old Brood is done, which was a little strange at first. You get used to coming up in a ring of fire and that really cool music. You get used to that, and all of a sudden it’s done. You have to get used to it, but you just roll with it, and try and make the best of what you’re doing, and I’m happy with what Christian and I are doing right now. I think the new Brood is a cool thing too. I think that they can take that to new heights.
BL: I think you all are going to have some really good matches.
EDGE: We’ve been working them now for about the last six months. Night in and night out, whether it be in Triple Threat or Four-Corner tag team matches, the Hardyz have always been in there for the most part. We have a good chemistry and a good connection with those guys.
We’re all in our early twenties, and all kind of started in the same way. We all watched wrestling growing up, and we’d go in the side yard, not that I can condone it, but I did it, and we’d just wrestle. The Hardyz did that with themselves, and Christian and I did that growing up. There are a lot of similarities there between the two teams.
BL: What brought about the spear?
EDGE: I don’t know. It was just one of those things. I did it when I first came in, just because I was always hitting the ring, attacking people. I figured that it was a good way to take somebody down really quick. Then it just kind of evolved to where the crowd was starting to react, so I thought, "if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it." So, I started using it in different parts of the matches where it would get a bigger reaction. It’s almost become my finisher, even though I prefer the Spiral, using the spear as a setup.
BL: Any last thoughts?
EDGE: It’ll be interesting to see where we’ll go, whether we stay a tag team ,Christian and I. Or, where we’ll go, whether the Tag Team Titles are in our future. I’m having a good time, and that’s really all that matters.
BL: Hockey season – who’s going to take it this year?
EDGE: Oooh... I can’t say Dallas. I don’t think Dallas will take it again. I’d like to say the Leafs or the Devils, but I don’t know if that’ll actually come true, but I’ll stick with the Leafs or the Devils, one of those two.
