Last year, the Pens were in the Northeast division with the Sabres, Bruins, Canadians, and the Senators. Now those teams left are their own division, still the Northeast.
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Darius Kasparaitis paid for his latest hard hit today, drawing a two-game suspension from the National Hockey League for elbowing Chicago Blackhawks right wing Jean-Pierre Dumont in the head on Saturday.
Kasparaitis drove his elbow into Dumont, sending the 21-year-old winger crashing to the ice. Dumont was motionless for some seven minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. He suffered a slight concussion.
Kasparaitis was assessed a five-minute major penalty for elbowing, which carries an automatic game misconduct. The incident occurred five minutes into the third period.
"The hit delivered by Mr. Kasparaitis was deliberate and his opponent was not in possession of the puck nor in a position to defend himself," said Colin Campbell, NHL executive vice president and director of hockey operations. "This type of hit is dangerous and warrants disciplinary action."
Under terms of the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, Kasparaitis forfeits $15,625.
