BREAKFAST WITH CHAMPIONS Fast Boats - Hard Bodies - Glittering Gold - Silver Tongued Devils - Hot Gruel Highlight the Battle of the Bay and Breakfast with Champions by Jim Logsdon On the Oakland Estuary, early Saturday morning, March 14, 1998 some of the fastest junior crews in the U.S. will race for gold and early season glory in the "Battle of the Bay." These four crews --Saint Ignatius College Preparatory (national champion), Marin, Berkeley High School, and the Oakland Strokes -- dominated rowing on the west coast last year and are keen to do it again. The chance to see this high level competition alone should compel your attendance, but there is more! Immediately after the races and medal presentation ceremonies, you are all invited to tromp down to Scott's at Jack London Square where the Oakland Strokes will present Breakfast with Champions, from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. This event, perhaps unique in the history of Bay Area rowing, will be hosted by Al Acosta and will feature presentations by three of the world's brightest stars in rowing -- Sarah Garner -- 1997 World Lightweight Single Scull Champion and USRowing's 1997 Female Athlete of the Year -- Jamie Koven -- 1997 World Champion in the Single Scull and 1997 USRowing's Male Athlete of the Year -- and Steve Gladstone -- the man who coached Brown to it great string of national championships in the 90's and who intends to do the same for Cal Berkeley where he now serves as Head Crew Coach. These speakers know what it is to excel and inspire. They will tinge your hearts with fire. Hot Gruel and other tasty breakfast treats will be served in Estuary Park ( just across the creek from the Strokes' boathouse) during the racing from 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. This unique combination of races, champions and gruel will not likely pass this way again. Everyone is invited...rowers, family and friends. It will be a day to remember. Tickets at the event Admission only $ 5.00
