The
Oakland Strokes dominated the men's junior events by winning both the Junior Grand Final
and the Junior Varsity Grand Final (2nd year in a row for the JV men's boat) at the 25th
anniversary of the San Diego Crew Classic regatta held on Mission Bay on April 4th and 5th.
The Varsity women came in 6th in their grand final with Oregon winning the crown
while the Junior Varsity women won their petit final after suffering through the
disappointment of battling back from a crab at the 750 meter mark and managing to come in
third in their heat but being forced into the petite final due to a protest being upheld
for clashing oars from Capitol Crew. A crowd of about 25,000 observed the event in
pleasant 60 degree weather despite threats from El Nino and occasionally windy
conditions. The men's varsity took home an impressive trophy for the first time in
25 years and men's coach Al Acosta was congratulated twice by coaching legend Harry Parker
whose Crimson boats were stored adjacent to the Strokes. It was an especially sweet
victory for the two senior members of the varsity 8 who last year narrowly lost the Grand
Final to Saint Ignatius by less than 7/10 of a second. This year they beat S.I. by
more than 6 seconds and open water. S.I. was later D.Q.'d after the race officials
learned that their coxswain had fortgotten his qualifying sand weight! The Junior
varsity was equally impressive bringing home the gold with a 4.83 second victory and open
water pulling away.
