Saturday Night Slams '99 08/14

"STUPENDOUS" STEVE FERMOSA vs. HOT CRIMSON

Crimson was introduced first, accompanied to the ring by Cup. Fermosa then made his way down, drawing a mixed reaction from the fans who still did not quite know how to respond to the newcomer. Without even removing his shades, Fermosa stepped through the ropes with a look of supreme confidence on his face. That confidence was quickly wiped clear as he was met with a sidekick to the midsection from Crimson followed quickly by a running lariat the sent Fermosa to the canvas and his shades flying out of the ring. Pulling Fermosa up, Crimson went for an Irish whip into the turnbuckle, but Fermosa planted his feet and reversed the move, sending Crimson hard into the corner...and into the referee. The official collapsed in a heap and as Crimson staggered backwards, he was caught with a kneelift to the back from his opponent, who followed that move up with a backbreaker. After working on Crimson's back for a few moments, Fermosa went for the kill, slapping on the Vice Grips submission hold. Crimson fought towards the ropes, but could not reach them. He eventually had no choice but to tap out...but there was no referee to see it. Frustrated, Fermosa released the hold and tried to bring the referee around, clapping his ears to wake him up. Fermosa turned back to his opponent, but by that time Crimson had gotten back to his feet. Grabbing Fermosa around the throat with both hands, Crimson started choking his opponent back against the ropes until both men spilled out to the floor. Crimson went for the choke again, but Fermosa freed himself with a rake of the face before slamming Crimson face first into the steel ring post. Blood poured down Crimson's face, but that didn't slow down either man, who seemingly forgot about the match at hand and continued the brawl on the floor. The referee soon reached his ten count on both men, ruling the match a draw.

MMP Saturday Night Slams is on the air! The MMP Coliseum is sold out with more than 15, 000 fans packing the arena from top to bottom. Commentators Jerry Wood and Ray Brewer are at ringside.

Wood: Welcome, everyone, to MMP Saturday Night Slams! I'm Jerry Wood alongside Ray Brewer where tonight two titles will be on the line, including our highly anticipated main event match for the world title. For most of 1999, a rivalry has been growing between Captain Patrick O'Conner, the reigning MMP world champion, and The Cult Master surrounding O'Conner's contempt for Cult Master's manipulations of the men who follow him. Tonight O'Conner's world title is on the line against the only member of The Cult he has not defeated, the seven-foot-plus, near 500-pound former tag team and extreme champion known as The Destroyer. It could literally be O'Conner's biggest test to date, and with such inexperience against men of such impressive physical stature, it could very well be the Captain's last night as champion.

Brewer: In another match that could even be more highly anticipated than the world title match, we will go live via satellite later on tonight to a penitentiary in New Jersey where The Bootlegger and The Ryno will do battle in the first-ever jailhouse match. This isn't about titles, this one is about proving who is the better man. Many will recall back at Chaos on the Coast in June when Bootlegger retained the universal title in controversial fashion over The Ryno, and ever since that time, Bootlegger has refused to grant Ryno a return match on even terms. The title is not on the line tonight, but if Ryno can pull it out, he may just force the hand of the front office into granting him another shot at the gold he once held.

Wood: We have one of our biggest lineups in recent memory on tap here tonight, including a big TV title match between former Syndicate allies Steve Simon and Scott Worth, former world champion Blitzkrieg goes one-on-one with Hall of Famer Psychotic Sam for only the second time in their careers, and much more, but before we get started, we have some troubling news to report. To deliver that information, we send you to the ring where Steve Lewin is waiting on Commissioner Grant Lindsay.

Interview
COMMISSIONER GRANT LINDSAY

MMP reporter Steve Lewin is waiting in the ring with a microphone in hand. The raucus crowd is growing anxious for the action to get underway when the opening title music for Saturday Night Slams starts to play over the loudspeaker. Commissioner Grant Lindsay then made his way down the aisle, carrying the midwestern championship belt. Lewin held the ropes open for his boss as the music stopped and the crowd quieted.

Lewin: Mr. Lindsay, you were not scheduled to be at the arena here this evening, yet here you are at the beginning of the show with Wolverine's midwestern championship belt. I'm sure that veryone here at the MMP Coliseum and everyone watching on television wants to know, well, what's going on?

Lindsay: Well, Steve, I have some sad news to report to everyone. Late last night as he was making his way to Saturday Night Slams, our reigning midwestern champion, Bobby Stuart, known to all of us as Wolverine, was involved in a severe automobile accident. Details are still sketchy at this point on exactly who or what was involved, but I do know this. After receiving word of the incident this morning, I went to the hospital to check on Bobby and get the latest word on his condition. After some minor surgery in the wee hours, Bobby's condition was stabilized, and he is expected to be released within the next few days. However, after talking to Bobby at length, we agreed that it would be best for him to take a few weeks away from active competition to rehab his injuries before returning at 100%. In coming to this decision, Bobby acknowledged that he would be forced to relinquish the midwestern championship, which I have here in my hands. If I could, I would like to call his scheduled challenger for this evening, Dr. No Limit, out to the ring.

DNL then made his way down to ringside, accompanied as always by Zane and Charles.

Lindsay: DNL, I know this is not the way you would have wanted to win it, but since you were the man set to challenge for the title here tonight, I, along with some of my associates in the front office, have determined that you should not be deprived of the opportunity that was afforded you by the former champion. According to the agreement I reached with Bobby earlier today, I hereby present you with this belt and declare you the NEW MMP midwestern champion.

Commissioner Lindsay passed DNL the belt, who somewhat reluctantly accepted. He then left the ringside area, followed soon after by DNL, Zane, and Charles. After returning the mic to the ring announcer and relaying some final instructions to the tech crew at ringside, Steve Lewin also headed to the back.

Wood: So there you have it, folks. Dr. No Limit is the new midwestern champion, although the real story here is the injury to Wolverine. I know you and Bobby were never on particularily good terms, Ray, so I won't ask you to comment. I can only hope the healing process progresses as well as reports indicate it will so that Wolverine can get back in action here in the MMP as soon as is humanly possible. With that said, we send you to our opening bout here this week on Saturday Night Slams. A man who will no doubt be affected more than most by this sad news, Masked Man X, will try to win one for his fallen stablemate as he battles one half of No Remorse, Whiplash. Let's go to the ring.

MASKED MAN X vs. WHIPLASH

After a pair of somewhat humiliating losses to Steve Simon, Masked Man X was clearly out to restore his reputation with this week's outing. Accompanied by Mighty Midget and The Fighting Heroes, MMX entered the ring with Whiplash already inside waiting for him. Whiplash ran in with a clothesline at the opening bell, but MMX ducked out of the way, waiting for Whiplash to turn around before connecting with a series of well-placed right hands to the head. With his opponent dazed early, MMX tossed Whiplash off the ropes, catching him with a powerslam before pulling him back to his feet and applying an abdominal stretch. After a few moments in the painful hold Whiplash finally managed to reach the ropes, but MMX didn't let up. As he released the hold, MMX got in a pair of solid shots to the kidneys before grabbing his wounded adversary and delivering a belly to belly suplex. With Whiplash reeling, the giant video screen suddenly cut away from the match to show Tao Te Ching watching the match backstage. Tao was laughing heartily at Whiplash's struggle, mockingly offering him pointers on how to turn the momentum around. While this was going on, MMX quickly mounted the top rope where he nailed Whiplash with a missile dropkick. With things seemingly well in control, MMX went for the finish, pulling Whiplash up off the canvas and nailing the X-Plex! Locking his hands for additional leveredge, MMX held on tight for the three count and the victory.

Wood: Masked Man X has returned to his winning ways after a couple of rough matches against Steve Simon, but it doesn't look like the same can be said for Whiplash, does it Ray?

Brewer: Whiplash's singles career has always been on something of a roller coaster here in the MMP. After opening up his career with a win in a hugely important battle royal, Whiplash went more than a year without winning a singles match. Despite spending most of that time in tag team competition, that's still an enormous stretch to go without picking up a win on your own. Then a couple of weeks ago, he makes his return to singles competition and pulls something of an upset over "The Punisher" Cole Payne. He looked good in a tough loss against Tao Te Ching last week, but here tonight it just didn't look like he had his head or his heart in it. Masked Man X walked all over Whiplash en route to a rather convincing win.

Wood: Many people were surprised when, earlier this week, Mute announced that he was breaking away from Captain Patrick O'Conner and The Untouchables. Word backstage is that this parting of the ways comes with no hostility between the two men and could be a result of the intervention of Mute's sister, Nightshade, into his affairs in recent weeks. Tonight Mute faces a huge test when he takes on Daark, a loyal follower of The Cult Master who knows what it's like to taste championship gold, and one who has compiled one of the more impressive win-loss records in the MMP. Let's go to the ring.

DAARK vs. MUTE

Daark made his way to the ring first, accompanied by two hooded Cult minions. As the trio made it to ringside, more Cult members slowly started coming towards the squared circle, emerging one by one from all sides of the arena. Then, as Mute's music started to play, the lights in the arena went out. When they came back up, Daark was facing the corner where Mute usually appears, but his opponent wasn't there. Instead, Mute had appeared on the opposite corner, and was positioned on the top rope behind Daark. Diving off the top, Mute nailed Daark with a flying clothesline that sent the Cult member across the ring and nearly out under the bottom rope on the opposite side. The referee followed Daark, checking to see if he was OK to start the match. While the official was conferring with Daark, Hot Crimson and Tao Te Ching rushed the ring through the crowd. Waiting for just the right moment, the duo jumped in the ring and just as the referee was turning around, they laid into Mute with a vicious double clothesline followed by a series of stomps to the head and upper body. Seeing what was happening, Daark grabbed the referee at the last minute and turned him away, preventing him from seeing the attack. Looking at one another as if their job was done, Crimson and Tao took off just as quickly as they had entered, leaving Mute struggling to pull himself up in the corner. Taking advantage of the situation, Daark quickly attacked the fallen Mute, nailing him with the Whispered Prophecy tornado DDT, reaching deep and hooking the leg for the three count. By this time, nearly twenty Cult members had swarmed the ringside area, including Harbinger and The Destroyer! The former tag team champions assisted Daark in tying Mute in the ropes and, with the minions on the outside keeping watch, Daark summoned one man carrying a branding iron into the ring. Walking slowly over to Mute, the man jabbed the hot iron hard into Mute's shoulder, leaving an imprint of the symbol of The Cult. The group then quietly walked away, leaving the official to free Mute from the restraints.

Wood: Daark is victorious here on Saturday Night Slams, though not without a little outside assistance from Hot Crimson and Tao Te Ching.

Brewer: After the recent battles between Crimson's pack and The Cult, it seems a little strange that they would be out here to help out a man like Daark. If you remember though, Wood, a couple of months ago when Hot Crimson first appeared on the scene here in the MMP, there were some rumblings backstage that Crimson and Mute had run into one another in the past, that there was some animosity between those two that ran much deeper than we in the MMP realized. Now it looks like there might be some truth to those rumors after all. Crimson and Tao got the job done and got out of town quickly, leaving Mute as easy pickings for the former television champion.

Wood: Up next is a match that fans have been waiting to see for a long, long time. Psychotic Sam and Blitzkrieg have met only once before in singles competition in their MMP careers, that match coming last November during the MMP/GWF Best of the Best pay per view event in New York City. The two men met in the semi-finals of the grand championship tournament, with Sam coming out on top and advancing to the final match. Now, nearly nine months later, these two finally meet in a return match. One is a former world champion, the other has already been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Only one will come out victorious tonight. Let's go to ringside to find out just who that will be.

PSYCHOTIC SAM vs. BLITZKRIEG

With Blitzkrieg waiting in the ring, "Space Farm" by Primus started to play as Sam made his way to the ring, accompanied by Mike the Giant Retard, who was carrying Harold the Fish and Marbels the Cat. While Mike distracted Blitz from the outside, Sam came in from behind and jumped right on Blitz' back, digging his teeth into the back of his opponent's neck. The referee quickly pulled Sam off, but the former extreme champion was relentless, raking Blitz' back with his fingernails before grabbing him by the hair, yanking him down to the canvas, and stomping him repeatedly on the forehead. With Blitz on the canvas, Sam mounted his opponent and began tearing at his face, grabbing both the top and bottom of Blitz' mouth and pulling them apart. Again the official had to intervene and pull Sam off his opponent, but it wasn't much help for Blitzkrieg. Blitz finally got back to his feet, only to be taken down by a chop block from behind from Sam as The Saint started to make his way down towards ringside. Pulling Blitz up, Sam raked his face across the top rope before climbing the corner turnbuckle and nailing Blitz with a flying bulldog. Things then started to heat up on the outside, with Mike repeatedly asking The Saint if he could teach Harold how to play Pac-Man. The tussle on the floor drew the referee's attention away from the match, just long enough for Sam to grab Marbels from the corner and nail Blitz in the midsection with the dead, stuffed cat's wooden base. After carefully placing Marbels back in the corner, Sam nailed Blitz with the Psychotic Smash before applying the Psycho's Punishment, mumbling "Summer of Sam, Summer of Sam" in Blitz' face the whole time. When the referee turned back to the match, Blitz eventually tapped out, and Sam was declared the winner by submission.

Wood: An outright dominating performance tonight from Psychotic Sam, who will now go on to Apocalypse in a little under two weeks to attempt to become the first ever four-time MMP extreme champion when he faces Aries in a warehouse match. Blitz, on the other hand, will have to try and put tonight's performance behind him as he and Whiplash are scheduled to face Tao Te Ching and a mystery partner coming up on August 25.

Brewer: If Sam can stay focused at the PPV like he did tonight against Blitzkrieg, I think there's a good chance he can come away from Shea Stadium with the title in his grubby little hands once again. You saw very little of his usual rantings during the match, at least containing himself until he had that awkward finishing hold applied at the end of the contest. On the other hand, if he goes off yelling "Summer of Sam" against the "Beast from Greece", he could very well find himself permanently embedded in the wall of that warehouse.

Wood: Our first of two championship matches is on tap next, with former Syndicate allies turned bitter enemies set to lock up for the first time. Scott Worth, now competing as a member of The Untouchables, looks to secure another championship for that particular group, which earlier tonight added the midwestern title when DNL was awarded the belt as a result of injuries sustained by Wolverine late last night in an automobile accident. Steve Simon will carry the banner of The Syndicate into this match, as we are joined once again for guest commentary by "Corrupt" John Korso. Welcome, Mr. Korso...

Korso takes out his wallet and drops a twenty dollar bill on the floor in front of Ray Brewer.

Korso: I insist that you take that money and get a better toupee, Brewer. That dead squirrel you currently have perched on your head is a downright embarrassment.

Brewer: Hey, you don't want any trouble with me Korso. Remember what happened to the last guys who tried to show me up? If you've forgotten, just ask Super Cupid or Pitbull. That is, if you can find them.

Wood: Gentlemen, please, we are supposed to be here to call a match, not start a match of our own. Now Mr. Korso, Scott Worth was one of the most active members of The Syndicate when it came to trying to help you after being abducted by George Achica a month ago, yet you sit here tonight a bitter enemy of the man who tried to help you. Is this how The Syndicate shows loyalty?

Korso: The world is filled with two types of people, Jerry. You have leaders and your have followers. Scott Worth was a follower. Nothing but a foot soldier in the Syndicate's army. Obviously, he was unhappy with his station in life and he's looking to prove me wrong. But Jerry, you already know that I am never wrong.

Wood: That remains to be seen, Mr. Korso. Let's go to the ring!

MMP Television Championship Match
"STUNNING" STEVE SIMON (C) vs. SCOTT WORTH

The challenger made his way down first with Inferno's phoenix blazing overhead. He was accompanied by Kimberly Brandon, who was constantly looking back over her shoulder out of paranoia and looked in rough shape, as if she hadn't slept in days. Steve Simon then made his way out with Kristin at his side and the TV belt around his waist. As he stepped through the ropes, Simon pulled out a microphone:

Simon: Worth, you don't belong in this ring. You belong up there in the bleachers with that disgusting slob of a woman and her two little future welfare recipients. Yes, you, Miss Piggy. Or maybe with this pencil-necked loser sitting right here in the front row. Hey there, how'd you like to have Scott "Inferno" Worth as your very best friend? God knows he can't wrestle--

Before Simon could finish, Worth nailed him across the back of the head with a forearm before sending him off the ropes and catching him with a powerslam. Simon was reeling early on, but right from the start of the match, it was clear that Worth's attention was focused as much on the troubled Kimberly on the outside as it was on winning the TV title. While Worth's back was turned as he checked on Kimberly, SSS got back up to his knees and nailed Worth with a low blow from behind. With Worth stunned, Simon grabbed the big man by the back of the head and slammed him head first in the corner, but rather than sending him into the turnbuckle, Simon slingshot himself over the top rope, pulling Worth's head over and into the top of the steel ring post. Simon quickly slid back in and started stomping away on his opponent when suddenly the curtains to the entrance way parted. Dr. No Limit, Zane, and Charles were making their way down to ringside. The trio all stood around Kimberly, trying to offer her a sense of security while watching the back of the newest member of The Untouchables. This didn't change Worth's fortunes in the match, though, as Simon stayed on the offensive, keeping the big man on the canvas as much as possible. Looking to speed up the pace of the match, Simon pulled Worth off the canvas and sent him off the ropes for a spinebuster, but as Simon went to pick him up, Worth nailed the champion with a running clothesline. Not wasting any time, Worth tossed Simon off the ropes and caught him with a big boot to the face before picking him up and hitting a sidewalk slam. Simon rolled towards the ropes to try and get away to regroup, but Worth caught him, stepping down hard with his big boot across Simon's throat, choking him out while pulling down on the ropes for additional pressure. The official eventually had to intervene, pulling Worth off and threatening to disqualify him if he continued with such an assault. Worth, still obviously with his head not in the match, brushed past the referee and went back after Simon, but the champion reached up and raked Worth's face, giving him an opening to get back to his feet. When the challenger turned back to him, Simon reached out with his right hand and slapped Worth square across the face! Worth was livid, and Simon quickly escaped under the bottom rope, running around the ring to avoid the big man. Kristin quickly stepped in to distract Worth, but within a matter of seconds, DNL appeared behind Kristin, picking her up by the arms and carrying her away to the other side of the ring. Worth turned around, but when he did, he was met with a flying forearm from Simon, who had hid behind the ring steps while Kristin cut Worth off. Just then, three more men made their way down the runway. This time, it was Daark, flanked by two of his Cult minions. The trio stalked Kristin, drawing John Korso up from the announce position. Korso cut the trio off, drawing the referee out to the floor to break up the skirmish. While the official's back was turned, the real Daark hopped the safety rail and nailed Steve Simon with a DDT on the concrete floor! The Daark that Korso had confronted was a fake! Seeing the real Daark attacking SSS, Korso quickly rounded the ring and attacked his scheduled opponent for Apocalypse. The two men battled back to the dressing room, with the Cult minions following closely, looking for the chance to aid Daark. Back at the match, Worth had recovered and grabbed Simon, rolling him back into the ring before going to the top rope. Perched on the top, Worth dove off with his old flying dragon manuever, but again his lack of concentration caused his judgment to be thrown off, as Simon easily rolled out of the way. Worth hit the canvas hard, and Simon saw his opportunity. Pulling Worth up, Simon nailed the Hollywood Plunge before covering Worth for the three count. After apparently spotting something troubling in the crowd, Kimberly let out a loud screech and pushed past DNL, Zane, and Charles, running back to the dressing room. Worth soon rolled out of the ring and, not caring about the outcome of the match, ran quickly after her as Simon and Kristin celebrated in the ring.

Wood: Steve Simon has retained the TV title, and now will go on to Apocalypse where he is scheduled to face Hot Crimson one-on-one for that prestigious title. SSS has been on quite a roll lately, and you have to wonder just who will have what it takes to get the belt away from him.

Brewer: That's been a common trend since the title was re-instated back in March. It seems that once someone gets their hands on the TV title, they seem to hold onto it for a long time. Wang Chen held the belt for several months before losing it, and now it looks like Simon will be content to hang on to the belt for many months to come.

Wood: Speaking of long title reigns, I can't recall the last time anyone held any title for as long as The Bootlegger has held the MMP universal championship. Since winning the belt back in March from John Korso, The Bootlegger has been more or less unbeatable, losing only occasionally in tag team matches and only once in singles competition, a DQ defeat at the hands of Psychotic Sam. Tonight it's a match of The Bootlegger's own creation, the jailhouse match, which we will broadcast live via satellite from New Jersey. I understand that the folks at the penitentiary are set to go, so let's send you to the east coast for our next match!
