Meet Former Broncos A look then and Now

Donatell leaving Shanahan's staff

By Adam Schefter
Denver Post Sports Writer
Jan. 27 - ATLANTA - Just as Mike Shanahan's streak of winning
two straight Super Bowls has ended, so has his streak of keeping
all his position coaches and coordinators.
Denver defensive backs coach Ed Donatell became the first
Shanahan position coach to accept a promotion, leaving the
Broncos on Wednesday to accept the position of defensive
coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. Donatell had spent the past five seasons with the Broncos.

In 1998, the Broncos set team records for touchdowns in a season (62), first downs in a season (347), points scored in a season (501), rushing yards in a season (2,468), total offense in a season (6,092), rushing touchdowns in a season (26), highest average gain per play (5.9) and most passing touchdowns in a season (32), all done in 1998 under Shanahan's guidance. Denver also set records for the most points in an entire season with 596, fifth-highest total in NFL history and the second-highest in AFC history.

I read this article, and found it very interesting and thought provoking. I for one agree that it is time to put the bitterness aside and find a common ground, with which to allow all to save face and shake hands. Whether right or wrong, the expression that Reeves used in Sunday's news conference, "Time heals all wounds", does not seem to be working in this case. Please read this, as you may or may not agree with it, but, it give us all food for thought.

The Elway-Marino showdown
They don't believe Jimmy Johnson's injury report. They don't believe the Miami Dolphins are 10 points better. And no, Al Michaels, they don't believe in miracles. The Denver Broncos believe they are better than the Dolphins, possibly as many as 14 points better.

I LOVE FOOTBALL!

Pardon my enthusiasm, I realize that basketball season isn't quite over and baseball has just started but, I could talk football all year long. I am what may otherwise know as a "Die Hard Denver Broncos" Fan, a fanatic, and so very proud of them, win or lose, rain or shine. They are made up of a group of guys, that actually play because they love the game, and for the most part don't demand millions of dollars, before they will play, like holding out and then playing really bad after they get everything handed to them on a platter.
There are a few professional football players that could use a pointer or two from John Elway, no matter what his faults, he went to Denver and stayed. He has always played because of his love of the sport. It has certainly not always been an easy road for him and I will admit, that there were times, when even the City of Denver wondered if they were doing the right thing keeping him. But Elway has brought awful lot of good to the City of Denver, and contributed a lot to give back to them.
I don't know if Elway will be our Denver QB this next year, but, even if he isn't, you can't fault him for walking away without having received the recognition he should have received years ago. I truly wish John Elway and his family the very best no matter what his decision is.

Elway makes it official: He's back, June 1, 1998

The following is dated April 24, 1998, taken from AP. Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway will get a stadium in his name after all. Granada Hills High School officials said Thursday they will proceed with a plan to emove founding principal Bryce Schurr's name from the campus football stadium and replace it with Elway's. The June 5 dedication ceremony is going on as planned after it was canceled indefinitely because some residents complained that Schurr wasn't being properly honored. The school has decided to put Schurr's name on both sides of the gymnasium and install his bust in the lobby. The move has appeased those who initially didn't want Schurr's name removed from the stadium. "We're moving forward in a positive way, trying to maximize recognition of the principal and the graduate," said Lee Alpert, an attorney who had opposed the change but now supports it. Elway, a Stanford graduate, was a standout athlete and scholar at his alma mater when he graduated in 1979. He has returned to his high school to help raise money by donating his jerseys, signing footballs and attending an alumni baseball game. Elway, 37, quarterbacked the Broncos to their first Super Bowl championship in January after losing in three previous appearances. The school is planning to unveil a $10,000 scoreboard with Elway's name at the dedication ceremony. Private donations and community fund-raising paid for the project, which is awaiting final approval from the school district.
