Spartan Warriors Opening Game -----------------------------
The Bill McGee Saturn Spartan Jr. B’s opened their 1998 season with a 14-9 loss to the Milton Mavericks in Milton. Although the Spartans were beaten by 5 goals, General Manager Bill LeFeuvre was rather impressed with his team’s performance. “If you look at the scoresheet you’ll see 16 rookies and 2 vets. This group of young players played a much more experienced Milton team. With the tenacity and effort these kids practise and play with, they will be a very competitive team within the next few weeks,” said LeFeuvre. “All our remaining veterans will be back next week and then the coaching staff will have some tough decisions to make”, he further stated. Player of the game honors were given to overage midget goalie Nick Smith from Niagara on the Lake. He faced close to 70 shots and collected 2 assists. Spartan scorers were: J.R. Enns 2 goals and 2 assists Greg Floris 2 goals D.J. Hudson 1 goal and 1 assist Scott Tykoliz 1 goal and 1 assist Rick Ignatczik 1 goal and 2 assists Bill Farnham 1 goal and 1 assists Anthony Manno 1 goal Up next: The Bill McGee Saturn Spartan playtheir home opener against Six Nations at The Haig Arena , Thursday night at 8:00pm.

Lacrosse Benefit Game ---------------------

I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank all the fans and players
who participated in the First Annual Jr Alumni All-Star Benefit Game.
I honestly don't think there was a fan who left the building
disappointed.
There is no question that lacrosse players are a class act. St.
Catharines has never seen so many world class lacrosse players play in
this city before.
The kids had total access to the players prior to the game, playing
catch, shooting on net, warming up and getting autographs with the likes
of John Tavares,Jim Veltman,Steve Fannell,Jason Luke,Dean Cecconi,Mike
Accursi, Colin Doyle,Brian Shanahan, Derek Graham, Darris Kilgour, Bill
Gerrie, Mike Hasen, Dan Teat,Joe Rosa, Jeff Wilfong, Steve Toll, Kevin
Dance, Peter Tavares, Ryan Kells, Cory Holman,Shawn Williams, and a slew
of others.
Regulation time ended with a score of 24-24 and the Toronto All-Stars
edged the St. Catharines All-Stars 7-6 in the ensuing penalty shot
showdown.
The penalty shots were incredible, with some TSN play of the game,
shots.(I still haven't figured out Darris's triple fake
spinnerama, behind the back and between the legs goal that dropped the
jaws of the fans and players alike!)
The game was played for a great cause, The Niagara Peninsula Children's
Center.
There were around 1000 fans in attendance and the proceeds of the gate
will go to the Children's Center.
The players all had a great time as well, as it allowed them to get
close to the kids and also friends on the floor that they have played
with and against for years.
At one point referee Terry Morneau issued a penalty to Steve Fannell for
holding, after a comical argument between the two, Morneau said,"If you
can do better,I'll serve your penalty and you ref!"
Fannell reffed for two minutes, disallowing a "questionable" goal for a
crease violation! Most of the players have alredy committed for next
years game with some even suggesting we take the show on the road to
centres that normally don't see this calibre of players.
I would especially like to thank Derek Graham for his hard work in
assembling the players, and to Johnny Mouradian and Mark Jeannaret for
doing a great job,on their play by play and color commentary work on
T.V.
Again thanks to everyone for making this a great event and we look
forward to the next one!!

Report on the Bash
------------------

Well, considering we had to deal with the blizzard of 98, the turnout for
our first annual bash worked out pretty well.

We did get about 250 people out which was surprisingly good since the frozen
ice and snow began at 5:00pm.

Some notables there were, Les Bartley,Johnny Mouradian, Buff McCready, Randy
Mearns, Steve Fannell, John Rosa, Pat McCready, Jim Brady, Derek Graham.
There were also a number of NLL players who contacted me and sent their
regrets because of the weather.

The Buffalo Bandits had set up a table and declared the April 11 game at MMA
"St Catharines Athletics Night" and are offering tickets at par for their
final home game.

There were some awesome deals to be had at the silent auction table.Signed
jerseys and sticks, framed prints, bikes, gift certificates, lax equipment,
tools etc.......

We are really looking forward to the next one!
