Micheal Mahoney is said to be the best catcher to ever play the game. He seemed to work magic behind the plate. If the catcher is the captain on the playing field, Mahoney was a 5 star general. He ran the field with his superior intellect, cat-like reflexes, and superior athletic ability.
Mr. Mahoney retired after the last game of the 1997 season. He was elected into the Quaffers Hall of Fame on his first ballot. His induction ceremony (or cereMahoney, as it's now being called) was held during halftime of the Superbowl in 1998.
Quaffers from the past and present showed up for his induction. Everyone who wanted to comment on Micheal's playing career had their say at the microphone. It upsuspectingly turned into a roast.
Joe Quaff opened the cereMahoney by saying, "We came here tonight to honor a gret man, a competitor who gave it all for years and years. A true blue collar hero. However, Pete Rose couldn't make it tonight. Since we are all here we might as well honor somebody. Allow me to introduce our former catcher...
Other memorable quotes came from:
Manager Steve Fanning, "Mahoney retired? I thought we cut him years ago! OK, anything for a party."
Mike Strobietto, "Hey, what about ME!!"
Kris Ketz, "Yeah, he played longer, big deal! I looked a helleva lot better in my uni' than he ever hoped for."
Tom Jackman, "My Mother always told me that if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything. So that's how I'll leave you. Thank you!"
Mike then got to the microphone and answered a few questions from the crowd.
Q. "When did you know it was time to go?"
A. "When the basic fundamentals of Slo-Pitch (petty ridicule, sloppy play, and blow job jokes) no longer intrested me."
Q. "What are you going to do on Thursday nights now?"
A. "I've got four words for you my friend: BLUE AND WHITE KOOL-AID!!!"
The party lasted well into the night with much joy and revelation. The buzz word around the party was that John Edgar would be the honoree next year. John didn't take this rumor too well. Regaurdless of this, everyone enjoyed themselves.
Micheal was hired as Vice President of Player Development in August of 1997. He is in charge of the Quaffers massive minor league system. He travels the globe to find the best players. In the first 4 months on the job, Micheal has traveled over 300,000 miles.
