Charlie lived on Higgins line in St. John's, not far from Confederation Building, so when his dog
had pups, and his mother charged him with finding homes for them, off he went to the big building.
Little did Charlie know, as he entered Confederation Building with his box of six puppies under
his arm, that Premier Brian Tobin had called a provincal election not a half-hour ago. Opposition
Leader Ed Byrne's news conference to respond to the election call was just wrapping up, and
Charlie suddenly found himself in the middle of several hundred people.
Who should happen by but the Opposition Leader himself. "Whatcha got in the box sonny?" he asked.
"Puppies, sir", said Charlie nervously, as he opened the box to display the six furry little critters.
"What kind of puppies are they?" asked Byrne.
Charlie, noticing that everyone around him was wearing a button which said "PC", responded,
"They're PC puppies, sir."
Byrne, noticing a couple of reporters close by, decided to play it up.
"PC puppies!!!" he said. "Well, they certainly must be from good stock, and will no doubt grow
up to be big, strong dogs. I'll take three of those PC dogs, son."
Charlie sold him three puppies and went on his way.
Two weeks later, Charlie still had the three remaining puppies, and decided to try his luck in
Confederation Building again. He no sooner had entered the main door when Premier Brian Tobin
came along.
"Hello there little boy. What's in the bag?"
"Puppies, sir", replied Charlie.
The Premier looked at the pups and asked, "What kind of pups are they, son?"
Charlie, noticing the Premier's button which said "Liberal", replied, "They're Liberal puppies, sir."
Tobin, quite impressed, bought the three remaining puppies and went on his way.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Ed Byrne had been close by taking in the conversation. "Come
here," he said to Charlie. "Two weeks ago you sold me three of those puppies and told me they
were PC puppies. Now you say they're Liberal puppies. How come?"
Our quick-thinking Charlie replied, "Two weeks ago they were PC puppies, sir, but now they have
their eyes open."
