Barry Bugden was well known in his home town in Bay St. George as being quite the lad to down a few and remain standing long after everyone else had fallen by the wayside.

Barry and a few of his buddies found themselves in a bar on George Street in St. John's, where one of the locals became quite vocal about his ability to drink anyone in the place under the table and boldly issued a challenge to anyone in the place to take him on.

After some prodding from his buddies, Barry accepted the loudmouth's challenge, and the rules were set. Each man would have to drink 24 beer in 15 minutes just for starters, and then go beer for beer until one of then couldn't go on.

Just as they were about to start, Barry asked to be excused for a moment. When he returned, he had the loudmouthed local silenced and was declared the winner after just a few minutes.

Following the hooting and hollering of the celebration in Barry's honour, one of his buddies asked him, "Barry, where did you go just before the competition started."

Barry replied, "I wasn't sure I could drink 24 beer in 15 minutes, so I went next door to try it first."
