The points race

Race Summary

  1. Mr. Atlanta Texas Thunder Bobby Labonte
  2. DJ
  3. Jeremy Mayfield
  4. Mark Martin
  5. Jeff Burton

Before I announce the winner of NASDRO's 1999 inaugural season, let's recap the greatest race of the year. Texas Thunder had a terrible car during practice and qualifying. The car was so bad, he thought he might Nemechek during happy hour. He qualified 37th. The farthest back any winner has ever started is 32nd.

But that didn't get anyone thinking Bobby was out. Every single driver, crew chief, and team member knew that Mr. Atlanta was the man to race. Bobby wasn't going to get any breaks out there; he'd have to earn every spot he picked up. And that's exactly what he did.

It didn't take the Master of the Monster Mile but about 50 laps to get up front, then the man who swept the Pocono races put on a clinic. Time and time again, he'd get out to a huge lead, then there'd be a caution (there were 8 cautions on the day). Things would get tight again, maybe Bobby would lose a spot in the pits, but then it'd go green and there was the number 18, all by himself and way out in front. He led the most laps, he led at the halfway point, and he won the race. That's how you keep the name "Mr. Atlanta." Sure, DJ had the cup wrapped up, but I think we saw a little preview of next year.

Question of the Week

For our final question, I asked y'all what changes you'd like to see to the big NASDRO site. I'm still not sure if I'll do it next year. It's time consuming, and it can be a bit of a chore at times. Right now I'm looking into ways to make things more automated. One suggestion was less Labonte fanfare and more links to race info from nascar.com, and that works for me. I'll let Bobby do the talking for me on the track. And I think I figured a way to make the comments page self-maintained, so that's good. Now the main obstacle is getting the points tabulated as easily as possible. Let me know if you have any ideas. Otherwise, check out the comments page to see everyone's suggestions.

The Points

He's been quiet the last few weeks. Some said he didn't have what it took to be a champ. But one look at Nathan's points total this week, and you'll see why he's been out front for so long. His is the highest one-week total in the history of NASDRO. Many of you did well, ensuring your ride for next year. Most of you correctly put Bobby in the top spot, and those of you who didn't got hurt for it.

All Hail Nathan!!!

Nathan has proven that he is the best NASCAR predicter out there. He had the most points despite one less start than some of the others, and his points per start average is through the roof. I'm working on a special Champion's Page, but I can't make any promises as to when it'll be up and running. Your 45-cent coupon is in the mail, Nathan.

Sean just didn't have enough at the end to catch the front man, but he made a valiant comeback. He may not win the points race, but like Bobby Labonte, I'm sure our mustached friend has won all of our hearts. Kevin and Tim were all tied up at the end of last race, but Kevin was able to stick to the inside line just a little bit better in the last turn. Tim showed a lot of class in the second half of the season, and he certainly provided the fans with a lot of entertainment. Sharon surprised everyone with some consistently strong finishes, although her early reliance on Ernie Irvan may have affected her overall performance. We'll have to see if she likes Jerry Nadaeu next year, the new driver of the M&M's car.

Duncan had the second highest points per start average, and who knows what could've happened if he'd been in the race all year? My dad was here all year, and he's been watching NASCAR longer than most of us have been a live. I don't know what to attribute his poor finishing to. Chris also dropped off towards the end, but he was a real force in the first half of the season. Let's hope he gets a better ride for next year. Neil made a strong run towards the end of the year, passing his longtime bitter rival Will. Both men are tough on and off the track, and it looks like this has been just one more battle in their brutal grudge war. My mom and my brother, Guy, have been intermittent participants, sort of like those fellows who only get sponsorship for a few races at a time. Let's hope they become full time next year.

It's been a great year at NASDRO, and I'd like to thank all of you for participating. I hope you've had as much fun playing as I've had, and maybe I'll see you here next year.
