This Sunday the boys of summer hit the asphalt in Michigan. How a loser state like Michigan got a track, I'll never know. I remember hearing something about Michigan and car-making, but who cares?

After a harrowing week at the Monster Mile, drivers are glad to be on a track that some say is the best track in NASCAR. It's two-miles long, it's wide, and it's smooth. They can really get up some speed at this track. Drafting is a factor here. And because the track is so wide, you'll see lots of passing on the inside and the outside. Smashachek and the coma twins Bodine and Irvan ought to put on a great light and smoke show for us.

When you're talking superspeedways and drafting, you've got to think about Taledega and Daytona. Think about those races when you make your picks. And don't forget that wreck DJ got in at Daytona. DJ's the current points leader, and a DNF at Michigan could toss him out on his butt. I also have a feeling that Kyle Petty wants to get in a racing deal, so watch for one of the Petty cars to lose a few pounds of ugly sheet metal.

Making a surprise pick has been getting harder and harder. Seems like you rarely see a man low in points getting into the top five. But I've got a couple ideas -- remember that this track was built and is owned by the Penske boys, so we may see a certain Penske car rocketing around the track late in the race. And I think rookies-of-the-year from prior years are going to try to show that Tony Stewart isn't the only young gun on the track. Steve Park and Kenny Irwin are two names that spring to mind. I'm also thinking about a certain million-dollar man who hasn't posted too many big finishes this year.

So get busy making your picks, and have a great racin' weekend.

Instructions

First of all, choose your name from the pull-down list. Then pick the names of the drivers that you think will finish in the top five. After that, you get to make your surprise pick, where you'll name a guy who isn't high in the points, but you think has a shot to get into this week's top five. It doesn't have to be one of the names you've already put in your top five. Now that the season is in full swing, let's use the current Winston Cup Points standings. Click here to check out the nicely done standings page at nascar.com. Remember, your surprise pick can't be any of the names listed in the TOP TEN of the points standings.

And hey, don't forget to pick a DNF. That's the guy you think will get a big fat Did Not Finish.

Click on the upside-down triangle at the right margin of each blank to see a list of drivers, then select a name. No typing necessary. Don't forget to tell me your name!

Controversial Topic of the Week

This week's topic brings us to the world of professional basketball. We've got three teams left: the Pacers (stupidest name for a team ever, except for "Wizards"), the Knicks (the most bearded team in professional sports), and the Spurs. The Pacers are favored to play the Spurs for the championship. But first they have to defeat a weakened but dangerous Knicks squad. Who will play the Spurs for the rings, and do you agree with me that the Spurs are going to fustigate whoever it is they play? Your best chance for bonus points would be to somehow connect your predictions to NASCAR. Example: "The Spurs will make the Pacers look like Geoffrey Bodine on thorazine."
