June 16, 1999 - The Anaheim Bullfrogs jumped
out to an early 5-1 lead and went on to defeat the visiting Dallas Stallions
12-5 on Wednesday night at the Pond. The Bullfrogs (3-1-1) had defeated
the Stallions (0-5) 11-4 one week earlier.
Dallas welcomed two new additions: goalie Joe Bonvie, the former Rhino and Columbus Hawk who played with Rob Laurie on the gold-medal winning USA IIHF Inline World Championship team, and Eric Rice, the former LA Blade who recently played for Pro Beach Hockey.
It took Rice only 9 seconds to make his presence felt, as he scored off a feed from Ross Harris to give his team the early lead. But their only lead of the night was short-lived as Roman Hubalek scored a little over a minute later, with an assist going to Rob Laurie on the play. B.J. MacPherson gave the Bullfrogs their first lead two minutes later, and Hubalek scored his second goal at the 5:15 mark to make it 3-1. Only 11 seconds later, Bob Rapoza scored to give the Bullfrogs a 3-goal lead, and Hubalek capped off his quarter with the early hat trick with under 2 minutes left to give the Bullfrogs a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A few minutes into the second quarter, Joe Bonvie had to toss aside his broken stick, and his teammates failed to either take an illegal clear or to pass off a stick to him, and Hugo Belanger made them pay, as he fired a shot past the defenseless Bonvie to make it 6-1. Nearly 4 minutes later, Wayne Anchikoski of the Stallions fired a tough angle shot past a sprawling Laurie to stop the Bullfrogs' goal streak at six. Then, with 1:28 left in the half, Ryan Shmyr was given a major penalty for a high-sticking penalty, and Dallas was also awarded a penalty shot. The skillful Harris weaved his way in before flipping a shot past Laurie to pull his team within 6-3. The Stallions would then have a man advantage for the next four minutes, providing a great opportunity to get back even with the Bullfrogs. Anaheim was able to kill off 1:28 of the major when the horn sounded, ending the first half. However, Rob Weingartner gave away 1:30 of the power play when he was called for roughing as the teams headed off the floor.
After skating even strength 3-on-3 for the first 1:10 of the third quarter, Chad Seibel was called for holding while preventing a partial breakaway. This gave Dallas a 4-on-2 advantage for over a minute, but the Bullfrog penalty-killing unit was able to kill it off, and Seibel made up for his infraction only 25 seconds after coming out of the box when he scored to make it 7-3. Then, with just under 4 minutes elapsed, Rob McCaig of Dallas was given a major penalty and a game misconduct for high-sticking, which gave the Bullfrogs a chance at a penalty shot. Hugo Belanger weaved in on Joe Bonvie, but his shot missed the net as he was denied. Only 25 seconds into the four minute power-play, Chad Seibel was again sent to the penalty box, this time for tripping. The teams skated 3-on-3 for the next minute, with the Bullfrogs missing a breakaway, and Dallas capitalized when Harris scored his second goal on an assist from Rice to pull within three goals at 7-4. When the Stallions were able to kill off the final two minutes of the major penalty, it appeared that the momentum had swung in their favor. But perhaps they had expended too much energy in the penalty-kill, as Hubalek scored on a weaving, 1-man effort to restore the 4-goal lead. Only 3 seconds after the ensuing face-off, Chad Power of the Stallions was sent to the box for tripping. Chad Seibel again redeemed himself, scoring a power-play goal as he wrapped the puck around Bonvie. Only 41 seconds later, Seibel again wrapped the puck past Bonvie for an unassisted goal to put the game away at 10-4.
Greg Smith replaced Bonvie to start the fourth, and was greeted by a Hugo Belanger goal on a beautifully executed 3-on-2 at the 3:17 mark. Brad Cook was called for holding a minute and a half later, but the Stallions were able to kill off the penalty, and when Cook came out of the box, a sprawling Laurie was able to deny Cook. The Bullfrogs turned the puck over, however, and Laurie was left facing Harris 1-on-1. Harris fired the puck past Laurie for his third goal of the night. Tom Menicci took out his frustration only 16 seconds later, when he scored the Bullfrogs second goal on only four shots in the quarter to end the scoring at 12-5. Chad Seibel later took his third penalty of the night, but Dallas was unable to score.
"We have quality goal scorers - 8 or 9 different guys", said head coach Brad McCaughey after the game. "It's important to play well at home. We want to dominate; any team can win in this league. Dallas will get better by next Tuesday."
"We have a smart, high-caliber team", said Chad Seibel,
who had a hat trick on the night. "I scored those two goals at the end
of the third with my eyes closed," he said modestly. "I just appreciate
when they come. We win games from our defense." Chad instructs youth
roller hockey leagues at Coast-to-Coast in Huntington Beach.
