June 11, 1999 - The Anaheim Bullfrogs lost to
the San Jose Rhinos in a wild, high-scoring shootout, 12-11, Friday night
in San Jose. The Rhinos (2-0) remain unbeaten with their second victory
over the Bullfrogs (1-1-1).
The Bullfrogs were victimized by poor goaltending, poor defense, or both, giving up 11 goals in only 27 shots. Rob Laurie had a bad game, giving up 9 goals on only 18 shots, and was pulled in the third quarter in favor of backup Cory Cadden, who stopped the bleeding enough to allow the Bullfrogs to take a late fourth-quarter lead.
The game was marked by a controversial goal at the end of regulation. With the Bullfrogs leading 11-10, the Rhinos scored the apparent game-tying goal with a minute and a half left, but it was waved off. Then, with only 3.2 seconds remaining, the Rhinos won a face-off in the Bullfrogs zone, with Mark Woolf firing a shot as the buzzer sounded. The shot went in and was counted as a goal, sending the game into a shootout. In the shootout, Woolf again came up with a clutch goal, tying the count at 2-2 on the Rhinos fifth and final attempt. This set the stage for Mike Taylor to win the shootout two rounds later, sending the Rhino faithful into a frenzy.
