LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO . . . The United Hockey League announced today that Asheville Smoke center Brent Gretzky has been named Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week and Missouri River Otters goaltender Brian Regan has been named UHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending Sunday, January 16, 2000.
Gretzky finished the week with 11 points (3-8) and a +8 rating in three contests. He began the week with a goal in the Smoke’s 5-3 loss on Wednesday to Muskegon. On Saturday, he posted the first of back-to-back four assist games in a 5-2 victory over Ohio. The following evening, the 27-year-old native of Brantford, Ontario had two goals along with four assists and a +5 rating as Asheville set a franchise record for goals in one game in its 12-5 victory over Ohio. On the season, Gretzky leads the UHL with 49 assists and 74 points in 41 games. His 25 goals tie him with teammate Peter Cermak for fourth in the League.
Other players nominated for the Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week include: Adirondack center Trevor Jobe, B.C. center Derek Knorr, Flint defenseman Nick Stajduhar, Knoxville forward Eric Schneider, Madison left wing Randy Holmes, Missouri center Alain St. Hillaire, Mohawk Valley forward Mario Roberge, Muskegon right wing Robin Bouchard and Quad City center Mike Melas.
Regan wins the Goaltender of the week award for the fourth time this season after posting a 2-1-0 record with a 1.02 GAA and a .957 save percentage in four games. He began the week with his sixth shutout of the season, making 22-saves in a 3-0 victory over Quad City on Wednesday. He appeared briefly (:23 seconds) in Friday’s game at Madison, without facing any shots. The following evening the 24-year-old native of New Milford, CT made 20-saves and earned his seventh shutout of the season as the River Otters defeated Knoxville (8-0). The shutout established a new UHL record for most shutouts by one team in one season. Regan finished the week with his lone defeat, a 3-2 loss to Knoxville during which he made 25-saves. On the season, he continues to lead the UHL with a 1.83 GAA and a .934 save percentage in 31 games. His 22 victories rank second in the League.
