A Disappointing Storm Season
(May 17, 2006)

The Tampa Bay Storm failed to make the playoffs for the first time since the team joined the Arena Football League in 1991. After fifteen seasons, and five Arena Bowl titles, the longest playoff streak in league history has ended. Head coach Tim Marcum has had plenty to say about not making the postseason and it is likely that a very different looking team will be on the field next year.

Before the season began, with six of nine teams making the playoffs from each conference, it appeared that the Storm would have little trouble making the playoffs. Even with inconsistent play, the team started 4-2 and there was talk about battling for the conference's top seed. At 6-4, a home playoff game remained a likely possibility. losing five of the last six games caused the Storm to miss the postseason for the first time in franchise history. A frustrated Tim Marcum said, "It's worst feeling you could possibly have, I can't tell you - with the exception of losing a family member. When in the profession you're in, whatever you choose to do, you are unsuccessful and everybody in the world knows it. That's the difference between coaching and being an electrician, unless you electrocute somebody."

It should be an active off-season. Eighteen free agents and the possible sale of the team should keep things interesting. There were plenty of injuries over this past season, and depth was problem, so the free agent signings will be key.

Shane Stafford, who now holds most team passing records, has indicated he would like to test the market. Lawrence Smauels scored a career high 22 touchdowns and would likely return, unless he retires. Offensive specialist Freddie Solomon is someone who Tim Marcum would like to have back. The signing of consistent performers such as Tramain Jones (DS), Umar Muhammad (FB/LB), Jonathan Ordway (DS) and Rod Williams (OL/DL) should be a priority. Other free agents worth a look are Pat O'Hara (QB) and Bill Gramatica (K). Lineman Buck Gurley may be difficult to sign and Nyle Wiren (OL/DL) has had a drop in production over the last couple of seasons.

A few key plays are under contract for 2007. Demetris Bendross (WR/DB) has come into his own, Ernest Certain (OL/DL) has been one of the most dependable lineman over the past few years and Jerrod Penright (FB/LB) showed promise this season.

Tim Marcum should be a busy guy before the Storm take the field again. The head coach said of not making the playoff, "I can't express my disappointment. I've not gone through this in Arena Football." It will take the right personnel moves to return to the top next season.
