1998 Week 11 Newsletter
This weeks stooge: The Stanley Steamers failed to crack the 10 point mark for the 1st time ever, scoring only 7 for the week.

Letter from the Commish:
As those of you know who were in the league last year, the Commish welcomes comments from the gallery. This year has been somewhat quiet in that realm but Coach Pedersen weighted in with a response regarding the Swords lack of a running game. In fairness to Coach P, hes right on the money when reminding us that, were it not for the season loss of James Stewart, Fred Taylor would be a mere blip on the screen. It happened so long ago that its easily forgotten. The thought of Stewart in the Swords lineup is truly scary when one considers the point totals the Swords have put up without him. Here is Coach Pedersens unedited reply:
"I much prefer the term "injury plagued" over "weak" or "lack of a reliable". Peter Boulware did in my running game when he shoulder whipped James Stewart to the turf and ended his season. Anything that I get from who remains is meant to be, just like Stewarts injury and Dorsey Levens injury were meant to be. And, the last time I looked, Donnell (no y) had more touchdowns than a lot of "reliable" running backs like Bettis, C. Martin, E. George, B. Sanders, Faulk, Dillon, Jabbar, Kaufman, T. Allen, Dunn, Antowain Smith, and Murrell to name a few. A healthy James Stewart would also eliminate 6 Fred Taylor TDs for the "Christmas came early" Retreads.
Just something to think about. I know they (my RBs) suck, but all humility aside, they just might work and then again any RB can get hurt and miss the rest of the season- even Terrell Davis. Hmm .wouldnt that just suck!
Stand in my corner. Im in your corner, especially this week. Go Mystics! break up the Party!"
While the Commish makes every attempt to be the objective bystander in all things league related, he simply cannot help thinking that the shit would be piled too high to breath sufficiently should the Party prevail and finally win an FFL title. Go Swords!! Week 15, go Retreads.
The NFL announced during last week that John Averys rushing total for Week 10 was being revised from 100 yards to 99 yards, the result of a one yard loss in the Colts game. With that, two points have been subtracted from the King of Dogs offensive totals and from the Bone Clubs defensive totals. The final score of their game is now 41-37, small consolation for Coach Young.
Suddenly, there has been a wealth of trading taking place around the league. As reported last week, PMS and the Strange Highways consumated a trade prior to Week 10 that did not work out well for PMS to say the least. Prior to Week 11, the Strange Highways made another trade, this time with the Retreads. The main acquisition for the Highways was Karim Abdul-Jabbar while Joey Galloway was the key for the Retreads. Then things got really weird. The Commish received a call Friday from Coach Detwiler asking for a rules clarification and to say that the Retreads were pursuing a trade with the NFC Norris for Jamal Anderson. The Commish passed along Coach Nerzs work number and thought no more of it. Later Friday, the Coach Wassem received a call from Coach Nerz himself. Coach asked if the Msytics had interest in Jamal Anderson. Needless to say, this came as a surprise but who wouldnt have interest so Coach Wassem of course said, "Yeah." Five minutes later a trade was finalized. The Commish isnt exactly sure what motivation lay behind Coach Nerzs decision to trade Anderson to the Mystics rather than the Retreads but as the saying goes, "Dont look a gift horse in the mouth." Coach Wassems only fear is that, with the luck the Mystics have experienced this season, Rod Smith and Napoleon Kaufman will suddenly explode down the stretch.
The journal Nature recently reported on the Greenback Iguanas in its latest issue. It seems our verbose but lovable creatures have made a journey never before thought possible. Having been tossed into the Caribbean Sea by a hurricane, 15 of the lizards apparently sailed 200 miles from Guadeloupe to Anguilla on a tangle of water logged trees. This small group of Adams and Eves appear capable of forming a new population. The journey of the iguanas began in September 1995 (we in the FFL know the true date to be September 1996) when two powerful hurricanes moved through the eastern Caribbean. A month later, the iguanas, fearsome-looking creatures up to 4 feet long, washed up on Anguillas shores on an immense raft of trees. The report provides the first clear-cut evidence in support of biologists who argue that seemingly impossible journeys such as this could have been an important avenue for the dispersal of species around the world. Imagine! The Iguanas could be the missing link to the dispersal of species. Only time will tell if they are able to disperse themselves as far as the playoffs.
Coach Will was notified just before gametime of the Mystical trade that occurred last Friday. Needless to say, the Party was thrown off stride and knocked psychologically out of its game plan even before the opening kickoff. They played like it, too. They started off quickly trailing by a 29-1 score en route to a 66-21 pasting, capped off by Emmitt Smiths 3 TD runs late. Once again, Emmitt (among Coach Wills all-time favorite players) came back to haunt Coach Will. When last seen, Smith was scoring a TD while sitting the bench for the Party in last seasons FFL title game, the difference in a 31-30 championship loss for the Party. This year, he proved to be the icing on the Mystics game cake against Grande.
Call it "Upset Sunday." The Mystics win ranks as the biggest upset of the 1998 season along with PMS defeating the Palace of Swords this weekend also. So much for Howe inter-division dominance. The Norris dropped its game against the King of Dogs, making the Howe 1-3 for the week. Other major 1998 upsets include Montezumas Revenge over Palace of Swords 40-19 in Week 2 (although its hard to call any Week 2 game an upset), the Bone Clubs 22-22 tie with those same Swords in Week 3 and, a smaller upset, Montezumas Revenge 36-30 win over the Greenback Iguanas. It seems the Swords play their best ball in their toughest games but have stumbled in games they were big favorites.
Just a note that, if the playoffs began today, the matchups would be #1 Retreads vs. #4 Grande To The Party and #2 Greenback Iguanas vs. #3 Strange Highways. The Retreads and Grande To The Party are separated by a single game in the Howe division and will meet in a season ending Week 15 showdown. If the two teams, finished in a tie for the division crown, the tiebreakers are as follows:
At this point, a Grande win would give the teams the same overall records and the same division records. Further, only 12 points separates them for the season. Week 15 could be large depending upon where the Palace of Swords are in the mix.
Lastly, a reminder that the trading deadline is this Sunday at 11:59 a.m. and the waiver deadline is Thanksgiving morning at 11:30 a.m. Be sure to set your rosters the way you want them going down the stretch.
Go deep, Ill throw it!

Coach Will Fiddles While Grande Central Burns; Grande Partied Out By Mystical Psyche Job 66-21
Trade or no trade, the Natural Mystics rose up from their season-long lethargy to turn the Party out 66-21. The 66 points was an all-time Mystics franchise single game high. The Mystics set a trap for Grande To The Party prior to their Week 11 confrontation then caught Coach Wills team in it, never allowing the Party to get started right. The Mystics acquisition of Jamal Anderson on Friday was kept quiet from Coach Will until just before game time as a ploy to prevent the Party from preparing and getting adjusted to the new threat. It worked as the Party came out cold and disorganized, quickly falling behind 29-1 and 35-5 before a late Steve Young TD pass and 100 yard games by Keyshawn Johnson and Curtis Martin made the Party point total somewhat more respectable. Things became so discombobulated at times that Young was quoted by the NBC announcers as having had "a Curly moment" when replays showed him running around doing figure eights in an attempt to avoid a sack in the 2nd half. Rather than focusing their energies on the contest on the field, the Party front office was burning up the phone lines in an attempt to make heads or tails of the trade despite the fact that the Party would have faced Anderson in Week 14 regardless. Without the trade, the outcome would have been different only in score (44-21) but not result. The Party inserted O.J. Santiago and Morton Anderson into the starting lineup, bring to four the number of starters in the San Francisco-Atlanta game. The Party was over when that game did not go as planned for Grande. To add insult to injury, Emmitt "Coach Wills love child" Smith provided the coup de grace with a 20 point performance in the 3:00 pm games after the Party had finished for the day. The 52 point running back outburst (20 by Smith, 18 by Hicks, 14 by Anderson) set a new single game FFL scoring record by the running back position, obliterating the previous record of 40 set in Week 5 of the 1995 season by the Bone Club against the LA Riots. Steve Young again led the way for the Party with 10 points. Morton Anderson had 7. At 8-3, the Partys division title hopes took a severe blow. However, they caught a major break with the Palace of Swords upset loss to PMS. Coach Will was quoted on Monday as saying he had the entire squad running wind sprints at 5:00 a.m. the day after the game and watching game film the entire afternoon as punishment for their lackadaisical play. "Drop and give me 50." In other post-game interviews, Coach Will acknowledged that the Party was especially hoping to win this week in order to complete what Will termed the "trifecta." By this, Will meant wins over Coaches Widtfeldt, Wassem and Young in the same season. Will also had his sights set on having the best-ever league record and topping the Mystics 1997 regular season record of 12-3. So, in Coach Wills own mind, this was a big game-which goes a long way in explaining why the Party played so poorly. Will blasted those who consider him an "airhead", saying that he fields top quality teams year in and year out. However, upon a reporter in the back of the room calling him by the name Brendan Frazier, Will broke out laughing. The Party plays Montezumas Revenge next week while the Natural Mystics hope lightning strikes twice when they play the 9-2 Retreads. Theres no truth to the rumor that Jamal Anderson is reportedly being shopped around to the Revenge prior to next weeks games.
In an unrelated news story, the FFL front office announced Sunday that it is opening an investigation into possible gambling charges against Coach Will. According to sources close to the situation, Coach lost a possible $200 payout on a five team parlay when Kansas St. scored a meaningless touchdown with three seconds remaining in the Nebraska game Saturday. The touchdown gave the Wildcats a 10 point cushion in a game with a spread of 9 ½ points. According to the sources, Coach Will could be heard muttering into the night "3 seconds, 3 seconds" while driving around town alone.

PMS Leaves Swords Seeing Red On Upset Sunday
The Palace of Swords could not get over the tough Week 10 defeat at the hands of Grande To The Party, coming out flat and losing to the 4-7 PMS squad by a 31-23 count. It was the 2nd straight loss for the Swords and prevented them from taking full advantage of Grande To The Partys upset loss and climbing back into second place in the Howe division. The Swords started new QB Bubby Brister in relief of an ailing Randall Cunningham. Brister accounted for 6 points. K Al Del Greco added 11 and WR Jermaine Lewis had the remaining 6 points. Again, the Swords were hampered by their running game as the season long loss of RB James Stewart is beginning to show its adverse effect. Donyell Bennett and Priest Holmes had a combined 11 carries for 20 yards on the ground. WR Antonio Freeman was shut out for the 2nd game in a row. PMS won despite getting no production from top gun Jerome Bettis. They got 11 points from K Mike Hollis, 8 from Wayne Chrebet and 6 from Mario Bates (2 carries, 1 yard). The Swords still trail the Party by ½ game and the Retreads by 1 ½ in the Howe. They play the King of Dogs in a big game next week while PMS will face the NFC Norris.

Highways Resort To Personal Punching Bag To Do U-Turn; Pull Out 38-34 Win Over Reeling Club
The Strange Highways, winners of only one game in the past six, turned to an old rival that theyve dominated in the past to right the boat, defeating the Bone Club 38-34 in Week 11 action. With the win, the Highways have defeated the Bone Club 5 out of 6 times in regular season history. However, the win did not come before Coach Widtfeldt called the Commish Monday morning to state his feelings as to why Barry Sanders "sucks" as a fantasy player. Sanders, you see, ran for over 100 yards once again but failed to score a TD. Instead, "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell touched the ball three times during the game and found pay dirt on each occasion. However, to the Bone Clubs disappointment, the starting WR tandem of Cris Carter and Carl Pickens were shut out on the day. Warren Moon threw a single TD ball. The Club had three bullets left in the chamber entering MNF (Ed McCaffrey, Jason Elam, and the Chiefs D). But the Chiefs D did nothing, Ed McCaffrey pulled a hamstring in the 1st half and sat out the remainder of the game. Jason Elam accounted for 12 points, pulling the Club close but again just short. The Club has lost its last four games by margins of 5, 9, 4 and 4 points. Throw in a 2 point loss in Week 2 to the Mystics and the Bone Club has lost five games by a combined 24 points. The Highways received instant dividends from new RB Karim Abdul-Jabbar. Jabbar had 100 yards in the 1st half and scored a TD. The recent trade for Jabbar proved timely because the Highways lost their other new RB Natrone Means for 3-4 weeks with an ankle injury. So, in retrospect, there was justice in the Highways-PMS trade involving Means and Curtis Enis. Brett Favre, Jerry Rice, Jabbar and Jason Hansen all scored 8 points for the Highways. The Highways improve to 6-4-1 while the Bone Club loses for a franchise high 7th straight time in dropping to 2-8-1 and taking ownership of the leagues worst record.

Dogs Cant Shake The Snake But Ice Norris 35-21
Despite 15 points from QB Jake "the Snake" Plummer, the NFC Norris couldnt stay with the King of Dogs, losing 35-21 and dropping to 4-7. With the win, the King of Dogs (6-5) stayed within one game of the Dewey division leader Greenback Iguanas (7-4) as they get closer to their Week 14 showdown. The suddenly resurgent Kordell Stewart scored 8 points for the Dogs as did WR Frank Sanders (11 catches, 190 yards). Wade Richey had 7 and Rob Moore and Terrell Owens each had 6 for the Dogs. The rushing attack sputtered again however. The Norris was a one-man show as Plummer had a huge day (31 of 56, 465 yards, 3 TDs). Gary Anderson had 6 points and no other starter scored. In an oddity, the Dogs are one game over .500 but have actually been outscored by 24 points for the season. The Dogs play the Palace of Swords next week in a huge game for both teams playoff hopes while the NFC Norris meet PMS.

Greenbacks Take The Steam Out Of Stanley 25-7
The Iguanas have averaged only 29.0 points a game the past two weeks but have managed, as playoff teams do, to win both of them. This week, they pulled out a 25-7 win over the low flying Stanley Steamers. With the seven points scored, the Steamers joined the ranks of the sub 10 point scoring teams in only their 11th franchise game. All Steamer points were contributed by K Matt Stover. The Iguanas didnt look impressive, however. Coaches Kevin & Kyle Bernadt hoped that their starting lineup would click this week with the addition of Kevin (Dyson) to team with Kyle (Brady). K Ryan Longwell scored 13 of the 25 Iguana points. The Falcon D added 6, Vinny Testaverde threw a TD pass and Barry Sanders added 100 yards rushing. From the perspective of the Coaching Flying Bernadt brothers, a win is a win of course of course. At 7-4, the Iguanas held off the King of Dogs for 1st in the Dewey division entering their game next week (and possible 1st round playoff matchup) against the Strange Highways. For the year, the Iguanas have allowed only 261 points (23.7 ppg). That total is 50 less than the #2 team, the Highways and Revenge both having allowed 311 to date (28.3 ppg). The Steamers loss put them at 4-7, 2 ½ games behind the Highways in the Cheatem division with four to go.

Retreads Take Sole Possession of Howe With Win
The Retreads wrestled sole possession of the Howe division lead away from Grande To The Party with a convincing 57-25 drubbing of Montezumas Revenge in Week 11 FFL action. The powerful Retread running game accounted for 28 points, with Fred Taylor leading the way with 20. Terrell Davis had, for him, a relatively quiet 8 points. The starting WR tandem of Joey Galloway and Terrance Mathis each had a touchdown, with Galloways coming on a punt return. The punt return meant double points for the Retreads who were also starting the Seahawk defense. TE Cam Cleeland scored another TD before leaving the game with a head injury. Newcomer Peyton Manning led the way for Montezumas Revenge with 3 TD passes for 12 points total. Randy Moss had a TD and 99 yards receiving. The Revenge running game, however, combined for only 2 points as RB Robert Smith turned in a goose egg against a league worst Bengal rushing defense. The game was still up in the air entering the 3 oclock games. However, Fred Taylor and Joey Galloway quickly ended all doubt. The 4-6-1 Revenge play Grande To The Party next week while the Retreads will attempt to stay in gear against the Natural Mystics.

This weeks additions to the FFL Record Book:
Swami Sez:
Yikes! The Swami has gone into a nosedive similar to that of the Palace of Swords. Wiping his hands off from a 2-4 debacle, he attempts to make sense of the changing landscape. Heres what he and his 40-24-2 record see for Week 12:
King of Dogs (6-5) vs. Palace of Swords(7-3-1)
Power Ranking: King of Dogs 8; Palace of Swords 3
Along with the Highways-Iguanas matchup, this is the biggest game of the week in the league. Each team desperately needs to win to stay within striking distance of the division leaders. The Swords can be expected to start Randall Cunningham at QB. We should also anticipate Antonio Freeman finding the end zone this week. The Dogs Cardinal trio (Moore, Sanders, Murrell) face the Redskins while Kordell Stewart squares off against the Jags. On paper, this looks as though it should go the way of the Swords. However, until the ground game steps up for Coach Pedersen, the Dogs have a chance. Look for the Doggies to claw and scratch their way to an upset victory on that fact and a hunch that Cunningham wont duplicate his performance from the 1st Green Bay game.
NFC Norris (4-7) vs. PMS (4-7)
Power Ranking: NFC Norris 4; PMS 11
Much has been made around the league regarding the Norris trade of Jamal Anderson. However, regardless of ones opinion, the Norris still has plenty of offense. PMS doesnt. Keeping it short and simple, the nod goes to the Norris.
Strange Highways (6-4-1) vs. Greenback Iguanas (7-4)
Power Ranking: Strange Highways 5; Greenback Iguanas 6
The other big game around the league this week pits the 6-4-1 Strange Highways against the 7-4 Greenback Iguanas. The Iguanas have not been firing on all cylinders of late but have been doing enough to stay just ahead of the King of Dogs while the Highways had gone 1-4-1 until posting a W last week against their old punching bag the Bone Club. The Iguanas have the better running game while the Highways boast the edge at QB and WR. If these two teams played 20 times, each team would probably win 10 times. It comes down to what it always comes down to in evenly matched teams---matchups. And in Week 12, its the Highways that have them. Look for Favre and Rice to prove the difference in a Highway victory.
Bone Club (2-8-1) vs. Stanley Steamers (4-7)
Power Ranking: Bone Club 7; Stanley Steamers 12
Pity the poor, proud Bone Club. Once a symbol of league superiority, 1996 proved to be a watershed season for Coach Youngs troops. The Club made the FFL title game in 96 despite starting the season 1-5 and scoring over 30 points in a game only four times during the regular season. They made the playoffs on the strength of a 13-12 Week 14 win over the NFC Norris. In 1997, they slumped to 6-9 and missed the playoffs as the result of a Week 15 MNF loss on a Richie Cunningham extra point. In 1998, they cant buy a break, losing five games by less than 10 points. Although #7 in the power rankings, they enter Sundays game versus the Stanley Steamers at 2-8-1. The Steamers are last in the league in scoring. With that in mind, and knowing that the Swami has picked Bone Club upsets the past several weeks, hes not about to abandon ship now. Look for Coach Young to break through the win column again.
Montezumas Revenge (4-6-1) vs. Grande To The Party (8-3)
Power Ranking: Montezumas Revenge 9; Grande To The Party 1
Grande To The Party has no time to stew in last weeks upset loss to the Mystics. With the Retreads one game ahead and the Swords ½ game behind in the division race, every game counts. The Revenge has been bit by injuries to John Elway, Terry Allen and Travis Jervey. Points have been a struggle all season for the Revenge, 10th in the league in scoring. The biggest factor in the Partys favor is the 49ers loss to Atlanta last Sunday. Look for Steve Young to have a huge game against the Saints Sunday night. If J.J. Stokes is the recipient of any of Youngs gifts, the Party will last late into the night.
Natural Mystics (3-8) vs. The Retreads (9-2)
Power Ranking: Natural Mystics 10; The Retreads 2
With help from the Commish, the Swami and Coach Wassems pre-game downplaying of the Mystics chances throughout last week, the stage was set for a Mystical upset. Eschewing their normal black home jerseys with gold, green and red trim and gold pants for all black uniforms white gold lettering, the Mystics worked their fans into a frenzy and befuddled the Party for a 66-21 bitch smacking. The trick now is to try firing the troops up again this Sunday while entering the Retreads den. The Retreads consider it a bad performance to score anything less than 50 points. The Mystics, despite their Week 11 showing, dont have that sort of firepower nor do they have favorable Week 12 matchups. Go with the safe money. Go with the Retreads.
