1997 FFL Week 6 Newsletter

This week’s high scoring team: This is getting monotonous. PMS for the 3rd time in 5 weeks has high points, this time with 46. Beer Spillers were 2nd but guess what? They were playing PMS this week. Ouch!!!

This week’s stooge: Hog’s Breath gets the honors again, this week with 11 points as Jacksonville is killing these guys. Means and Jimmy Smith have been silent.

Letter from the Commish:

The Strange Highways and the Greenback Iguanas pulled the trigger on a trade this past week. The Highways dealt Raymont Harris and Brett Perriman in exchange for Mike Alstott and Yancy Thigpen. The Highways were pleased to part with Perriman who they thought would be difficult to deal. The key for the Highways was getting Thigpen in time for his Week 6 contest against the Bone Club as Coach Widtfeldt anticipated the Club starting Kordell Stewart at QB and hoped to negate any TD throws he might have. It was the second trade in three weeks for the Iguanas who earlier had dealt Natrone Means to Hog’s Breath for Tony Martin.

The "Priority Pickup" period was much more quiet this week than last. Only four teams made moves during that time: PMS, Palace of Swords, Natural Mystics, and Beer Spillers. The Mystics and Beer Spillers then followed up their waiver wire moves with a trade. After picking up the Vikings defense and dropping Gary "How Now" Brown "Cow", the Mystics dealt the Vikings D to the Spillers along with Jeff Graham in exchange for Kerry Collins (the Mystics are Collins’ third team in three weeks) and Terrell Owens. The Spillers needed a D for Week 6 and got Jeff Graham as a backup WR while the Mystics wanted Terrell Owens for Week 7 when Rod Smith and Tim Brown are out with their byes. Interestingly enough, the Swords waived Trent Dilfer who they had picked up only one week earlier and did not use. At the time, this impacted the Highways who were intent on signing Dilfer for themselves. As it turned out, the Highways signed Stan Humphries who led them to their first win of the year in Week 5. But it must be noted that the Swords appear to be an organization drifting, casting off last week’s flavor for this week’s. By the way, this week’s flavor is Darnay Scott, giving the Swords Blake, Scott and McGee. This means that now the Swords can start three Bengals who will score little to none rather than only two Bengals. This also now gives the Swords 8, yes 8, wideouts to choose from on a weekly basis. The Commish had this same problem last year and found it wrenching to determine his starters from week to week. Too many cooks.... . At game time, Coach Pedersen gave the starting position to Willie Green rather than Scott, who left the game later with a hip injury, continuing his trend of picking up players and letting them sit the bench.

The Commish was surprised at the depth of passion displayed by various league members in the wake of last week’s comments regarding a proposal to limit "priority pickups" to one per week. This would mean no team could use its second transaction of the week until each Thursday when it would be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The proposal was first brought to the Commish by Coaches Young and Widtfeldt who, despite their 0-4 records, have still managed to score just enough points to not be first each week. That honor (?) has belonged to Hog’s Breath throughout. It’s only fair to point out that Hog’s Breath selected Cory Dillon and Mario Bates last week, much to the chagrin of several other teams who had their sights set on them. Neither was a factor in Week 5 games, however (i.e. it’s often a crapshoot at best). Coach Schmitz weighed in strongly in opposition to the proposal. It was his feeling that the current system is designed to assist the worst teams and that’s what it does (also during the course of Coach Schmitz’s fiery speech, he was quoted as saying that Emmitt is a fantasy bum in ‘97--or rather he’s a bum as a result of his line). Coach Pedersen filled all three minutes of the Commish’s voicemail with his opinions, still voicing them when the three minutes were up and he was cut off. Wait, I’m not through yet!! Pedersen is strongly in the corner of those who desire to revise. Further, Pedersen would like to see each transaction cost $1 to encourage teams to practice moderation when utilizing the waiver wire. The theory is that teams would be more inclined to consider how badly they want a player before making moves indiscriminately. Of course, the extra money would also increase the size of the pot. The Commish is inclined to come out in favor of the status quo on the theory that the system is currently designed to create parity by helping the teams most in need of help. Not all take advantage of that status in any event. However, to create a greater opportunity for winning clubs to acquire talent each Thursday when it’s first-come, first-serve, would allow the rich to still get richer while the poor would improve only incrementally at best.

In a late-week trade, the Strange Highways finally dropped the axe on that bum Emmitt Smith, sending him running (for a loss) into the salivating arms of the Cowboys’ very own lapdog, Coach Mark Will and Grande To The Party in a shocking intra-division trade. The trade talks began with Widtfeldt discussing Gus Frerotte with Coach Will. Will offered Frerotte for Emmitt with the line, "Frerotte’s got more yards than Emmitt, he’s got more points than Emmitt." Frerotte was momentarily forgotten in lieu of Emmitt who, as we all know, Will wants to have children with. The early parameters of the trade quickly boiled down to Emmitt and Isaac Bruce for Ki-Jana Carter and Derrick Alexander. Frerotte, the trade starter almost became the trade killer when Widtfeldt brought his name back up. The two resorted to written bids and settled on a final trade of Emmitt Smith, Isaac Bruce, O.J. McDuffie, Wayne Chrebet, and Dan Marino for Ki-Jana Carter, Derrick Alexander and Gus Frerotte. As the trade was being consumated, the image of M-A R to the K, 1 to the 0 could be seen in the background on the Commish’s television set doing the two step for Todd Smith’s gym. This gives Will the #1 and #3 pick in the ‘97 FFL draft. It also unites WR Bruce (a ‘96 Will starter) and Robert Brooks ( a Will starter in ‘95, the year of Will’s infamous K decision in the FFL championship game ("If ifs and buts were candies and nuts...") and a starter in ‘97) to form a potentially potent set of starting WR. It gives Will better depth at WR and lastly gives Will Emmitt, always a dangerous player. For the Highways, the trade provides a better overall team focus. Most starting jobs now have specific names penciled in across the board, meaning fewer gameday decisions (see Swords list of WR). Widtfeldt and Emmitt never saw eye to eye and Widtfeldt has been high on Carter for some time. Widtfeldt has now turned over his starting backfield in a matter of five days. The Highways have been impressed by Derrick Alexander, calling him the better player of the Alexander-Jackson tandem in Baltimore. Lastly, the additions of Frerotte and Thigpen earlier in the week allow the Highways to negate Bone Club’s Kordell Stewart and Leslie Shepherd. After the trade, both coaches felt good about what they had acquired although each admitted to also some nervousness as a result of the questionable status of Bruce, Carter and Emmitt’s funk. There was no word on Highway G.M. Hooper’s reaction to the news that her beloved Marino and McDuffie had been shipped off. Ki-Jana and Alexander combined for 14 points in their first game in Highway uniforms while Emmitt and Co. went scoreless (the difference between winning and losing for the Party). The Highways have now acquired Ki-Jana, Alstott, Herman Moore, Alexander and Thigpen this season.

This just in. In an unrelated story, the Florida State Seminoles have shut out the living-on-their-reputation Miami Hurricanes by a 47-0 count. This comes on the heels of the arrest of two Hurricane players during an altercation with Miami police. The loss was Miami’s worst since 1944.

The Mystics and the Supercuts are the only two teams who were able to sweep their division the first time through. As a result, they each lead their divisions. PMS won high points for the third time this year. They’re giving up lots of points (ask Coach Schmitz) but continue to simply outscore people. Will someone please step up and slow them down a little? They’ve won five straight. The Cuts have won three straight.

The early returns on the Spillers-NFC Norris trade of a week ago is that the Spillers got the better of it back in Suds, Wisconsin. Coach Widtfeldt figured the trade meant that Coach Nerz decided to cause his seven game losing streak rather than wait for it to happen. Coach Wassem liked the fact that the Spillers gave up a backup QB (albeit John Elway) and received a first round RB in exchange. Rickey Watters scored 14 and Andre Rison had 6 for the Spillers in Week 6. By the way, Coach Nerz, you asked about how to get your remaining money to Paul Young. Write a check and mail it to the same address that has appeared below since the first week of the season. Do it now while you’re reading this. Otherwise, you’ll forget again. Now, I said!! Get up. Yes, you. Now. Where’s your checkbook? OK. Walk over there and get it. Make it out for $25. Where do you keep your envelopes and stamps? Finish it up and drop it in the mail.

Enough of Week 6. On to Week 7.

Go deep, I’ll throw it! -The Commish

Week 6 Recap:

Mystics Win 6th Straight 17-11; Division Lead Three

Playing its worst game of the year, the Natural Mystics managed to find a way to win in a low scoring game, fighting off the pesky Hog’s Breath bunch for an ugly 17-11 win. The win was the 6th in a row for the Mystics and increases their lead to three games over 2nd place NFC Norris. The Mystics’ only 6 pointer of the day was Eric Green’s 22 yard TD catch in the first quarter. Jeff George and Tim Brown connected for a TD but it was called back due to an illegal procedure penalty on the play. George later tossed a 70 yard TD pass. Jerome Bettis continued his dominating running with 137 yards but was robbed once again of the short yardage scores as the Steeler QB still insists on being a ball hog down close. Rod Smith accounted for 130 of the Broncos’ 191 passing yards and was getting interfered every time he crossed the line of scrimmage. Aikman led the Breath with 7 points on a TD pass, 300 yards for the day and a 2 point conversion. The only other scoring was Todd Peterson’s 4 points in the kicking game. Hog’s Breath is now 1-5 on the season, alone in last place of the Larry division. The Natural Mystics’ win gives them a sweep of the division the first time through. They’ve won games this years by 3 points and 4 points. Asked to comment, Coach "Marley Marl" Wassem replied, "Things are not the way they used to be. I won’t tell no lie. One and all got to face reality now."

Swords Slice Norris Early; Hold On For 25-21 Win

Palace of Swords led early and never trailed in a 25-21 win over divisional foe NFC Norris. The win moves the Swords out of the goo goo muck of the division cellar. Jeff Blake scored a rushing TD and ran for 75 yards in the win while Antoine Smith once again broke free for a long second half touchdown for the Swords. Forty-seven year old Andre Reed caught a TD and new K Al Del Greco booted 7 points. The Norris got another 100 yard rushing day and a TD for RB Eddie George and a TD sneak from John Elway. However, Elway failed to throw a touchdown pass this week. The Swords improve to 2-4 while NFC Norris falls to 3-3, three games behind the Natural Mystics in the division.

PMS Outlasts Beer Spillers 46-42; Win 5th Straight

PMS continued its perfect record of scoring 40+ points in every game this season in fending off the tough luck Beer Spillers 46-42 in Curly division action. They needed every point they could get as the Spillers stayed close throughout the game. Only Drew Bledsoe’s subpar performance Monday night prevented a tie or a Spillers win. While the Mystics were outscored by every team in the league with one exception and won, the Spillers outscored every team in the league but one and lost. Ouch! Brad Johnson threw two more TD passes for PMS and Antonio Freeman held on to the ball long enough to score twice. The starting backfield of Kaufman and Allen combined for 14 points. The difference was the defensive score by PMS on Wil Blackwell’s 97 yard kickoff return. For the Spillers, Rickey Watters paid dividends with 14 points. New TE Mark Bruener scored 6 as did Cris Carter, Andre Rison and Matt Stover. Shawn Jefferson dropped at least two of Bledsoe’s passes after picking up pointers from Freeman during pre-game. PMS is alone in the Curly division at 5-1, one game ahead of the Iguanas. The Spillers are 2-4, three back.

Testaverde Throws Three In Iguana Win Over Snakes

Despite Vinny Testaverde’s 2 INT and 2 fumbles, the Greenback Iguanas defeated the Crawling King Snakes 38-20 behind his 13 points Sunday. The Iguanas’ ground game was also effective, with Karim Abdul-Jabbar’s skyhook and Raymont Harris each scoring a rushing TD. The defense scored for the fourth time in five weeks for the Iguanas. Talk about bonus points!! The King Snake rushing game also scored 12 points and Scott Mitchell stumbled and tripped his way in from 8 yards out. However, the WR for both teams were quiet and the Iguanas had a slight edge in the kicking game. The Snakes have lost their last two in dropping to 3-3 while the Iguanas have won two straight to improve to 4-2 and one game behind PMS in the division.

Bone Club Speeds Over Highways By 41-31 Count

The Bone Club continued to rack points up quickly by scoring a 41-31 knockout of the Strange Highways in Moe division action. The win, the Bone Club’s 2nd in a row, was led by the 24 points of QB Kordell Stewart. Yo Adrian Murrell contributed 6 as did Anthony Miller. The Highways lost the game at the QB position where Stan Humphries was held without a TD pass. New starting backfield Ki-Jana Carter and Mike Alstott each scored a TD for the Highways while new WR Derrick Alexander also scored a TD. New WR Yancy Thigpen caught balls equalling over 100 yards. New, new, new. However, the Highways could not keep up with Kordell who threw 3 TD passes and ran for 2 more. The Bone Club jumps to third place at 2-4, one game behind Grande To The Party and two behind April’s Supercuts while, strangely, the Highways, at 1-5, have taken a wrong turn to lead the cellar and are close to cashing in the season. The win was a rare one for Coach Young over a Coach Widtfeldt led squad and has further quieted the normally talkative Coach Widtfeldt. Fortunately, he still has Coach Wassem’s coattails to hang on in another league as the team they co-own is off to a 5-1 start of its own. The Club has scored 105 points in its two wins.

Supercuts Trash The Party 38-20; Lead Division By 1

The surprising Supercuts held on for the second straight week. Terrell Davis turned what had been an ugly, low scoring game into a rout on Monday night with 14 points on 2 TD and 171 yards rushing. This time, they won by a 38-20 score over Grande To The Party to give them sole possession of first place in the Moe division at 4-2. The win, the Cuts’ 3rd in a row, was led by the passing of QB Mark Brunell who threw for 3 TD passes. Grande got 2 Brett Favre TD passes but Favre was outperformed for the second straight week. Newcomer Emmitt Smith ran for 91 yards but not the endzone marking the 7th game in a row without a rushing TD for Emmitt. Warrick Dunn tried to make up the difference with 8 points of his own but, other than the K Cary Blanchard, no other Party goer scored. The difference was the Packer defense as Gabe Wilkins hurdled his way to a 77 yard interception return and a Supercuts win. The Cuts have swept their division foes and lead the Moe at 4-2 while Grande To The Party is stumbling of late and has fallen to second at 3-3.

Swami sez:

Natural Mystics (6-0) vs. Bone Club (2-4)

Power Rankings: Mystics 2; Bone Club 4

The Bone Club comes into this game flying high with wins its last two weeks and scoring points now on a consistent basis. In the crazy Moe division, 2-4 does not count the Bone Club out by any stretch of the imagination. The Natural Mystics sputtered in Week 6 and catch Coach Young’s team with Jeff George, Tim Brown and Rod Smith all sitting the bench with bye weeks. Kordell leads the Club along with the powerful rushing game of Barry Sanders and Adrian Murrell. For the Mystics to have a chance, Jerome Bettis and Dorsey Levens will need to score and the backup WR will need to come off the bench to contribute. Disregard the power rankings in this one as the momentum of the Bone Club should be greater than the 6-0 record of the Mystics. This is the week the Mystics fall. The Bone Club lead the series 3-0.

PMS (5-1) vs. April’s Supercuts (4-2)

Power Rankings: PMS 1; Supercuts 8

PMS and April’s Supercuts in a battle of first place teams led by female owners. What’s the world coming to? PMS has cracked the old boys’ network with a powerful attack while the Supercuts have been winning their games with defense. On paper, this game should be a mismatch as no one has stopped PMS all season. However, the Supercuts have been slowing down teams with regularity. Watch for Johnson-to-Reed to get untracked this week after a letdown in Week 6. The Supercuts must do battle without Terrell Davis, on the bench this week with a bye. This puts added pressure on QB Mark Brunell and RB Lawrence Phillips. Phillips will be facing the rugged 49er D. Look for PMS to outscore the Cuts in this one. This overall series is tied 1-1.

NFC Norris (3-3) vs. Crawling King Snakes (3-3)

Power Rankings: NFC Norris 11; King Snakes 5

Each of these teams enter the game with losing streaks . NFC Norris has dropped its last three while the King Snakes have lost two straight. Norris must play without starting QB John Elway and WR Michael Jackson, on the bench with a bye this week. That means Steve McNair must step up his production for the Norris. RB Eddie George and big Ben Coates will also have to produce for the Norris to stay in the game. For the Crawling King Snakes, unaccustomed to a regular season losing streak of any sort, only starter Bam Morris will miss the game. As usual, for the Snakes to win, they must see production from their starting WR. This week, look for the Snakes to go with the three WR set. The Swami sees this one turning in favor of the Snakes. The NFC Norris leads this series 1-0.

Greenback Iguanas (4-2) vs. Palace of Swords (2-4)

Power Rankings: Iguanas 3; Swords 10

The Iguanas come into this game on a roll and scoring enough points to stay in any game. However, they will be without starters Vinny Testaverde and Tony Martin. Neil O’Donnell will step in behind center to face the Dolphin defense. Newcomer Raymont Harris will run against the Packers. The faster Chicago falls behind, the less of a factor Harris should be. O’Donnell to Keyshawn would go a long way toward an Iguana victory. The Swords won last week to improve to 2-4 and remain alive for a playoff berth. The Swords can probably afford only two more losses on the year, making each week a must win week. The Swords have all starters available this week. The only question is who will Coach Pedersen pick up and not use in Week 7. Starting backs Curtis Martin and Robert Smith have home games against Buffalo and Carolina, respectively, while Jeff Blake historically feasts on the Oiler secondary. This series is tied up at 1-1.

Hog’s Breath (1-5) vs. Strange Highways (1-5)

Power Rankings: Hog’s Breath 12; Highways 6

In a battle of cellar dwellars, the Strange Highways square off against Hog’s Breath to determine who is truly the league’s worst team approaching the halfway point of the year. The Highways have virtually turned over their entire roster and will start newcomer Gus Frerotte at QB this week. He’ll be backed up by RB Mike Alstott and Ki-Jana Carter with the WR being Herman Moore and perhaps Curtis Conway making his first start of the season against Green Bay. Hog’s Breath gets Steve Young back for the game and needs Natone Means and Jimmy Smith to come out of their funks against the Eagles defense. Marcus Allen, Ed McCaffrey and Ted Popson all sit out this week for the Breath with byes. Stan Humphries has a bye for the Highways. This is the first time these two teams have met in a league game.

Beer Spillers (2-4) vs. Grande To The Party (3-3)

Power Rankings: Spillers 7; Grande 8

The underachieving Grande To The Party will try once again to fire on all cyclinders, something they have not been able to do even with Brett Favre behind center. Newcomer Emmit Smith, held scoreless last week, will attempt to find the endzone for the first time in eight weeks when facing the Redskins on Monday night. Warrick Dunn and the Bucs will try to rebound from their first loss at home against the Lions. Grande could give new WR Isaac Bruce his first start of the year although it comes against the 49ers. The Beer Spillers appear to be coming together offensively with Drew Bledsoe, Rickey Watters, Andre Rison, Cris Carter and Shawn Jefferson all dangerous. As the theory goes, if you can stop Favre, you can stop the Party. Party is without Sharpe and Jett due to byes while the Spillers are without Anders and Rison. This will be the first meeting between these two teams.

Swami had a another good showing in going 4-2 for Week 6. This brings the Swami to an even 18-18 for the season. Swami had the good fortune of even accurately picking the Natural Mystics last week. Buoyed by his second straight positive week, he’s back this week for more. Point spreads are still included but, again, don’t hold those against Swami as he’s had a hard enough time just picking the winners until recently.

NOTE: Bye weeks are Baltimore, Denver, Kanas City, Oakland, San Diego, Seattle

Bone Club (2-4) +2 Natural Mystics (6-0)

PMS (5-1) -7 April’s Supercuts (4-2)

Crawling King Snakes(3-3) -6 NFC Norris (3-3)

Greenback Iguanas (4-2) -7 Palace Of Swords (2-4)

Strange Highways (1-5) -6 Hog’s Breath (1-5)

Grande To The Party (3-3) +1 Beer Spillers (2-4)

Wednesday’s order of pickup w/ total points scored for season to date:

1. Hog’s Breath 118 7. Grande To The Party 191

2. NFC Norris 169 8. Crawling King Snakes 195

3. Strange Highways 178 9. Greenback Iguanas 228

4. Palace of Swords 181 10. Bone Club 230

4. April’s Supercuts 181 11. Natural Mystics 236

6. Beer Spillers 183 12. PMS 288

Palace of Swords and April’s Supercuts are tied. Swords would get dibs in the event they pick up the same player because of a worse overall record.
