Ferguson Promises to Help Beckham (5/7/98) |
Alex Ferguson has said that he will help David Beckham get over his World Cup actions when he returns to Manchester United for pre-season training later this month. In an interview Ferguson said, "At Manchester United we have made it clear to Beckham that he has to deal with his problem. I have tried to ram it home to him that it's a physical game where players of talent will always be singled out for a hard time. I have told him that the only way to get back at opponents who do that is by showing he's better with the ball than they are, but in the heat of the contest he doesn't always keep control. He can rely on a lot more help with getting over his depression when he reports at the club for the new season on July 13." |

David Beckham
has been talking about his sending-off incident in Tuesday's Second Round
World Cup game against Argentina. he said that he felt "sick and numb"
when referee Nielson showed him the red card. Then while watching England
in the penalty shoot-out he said that he could hardly bear it, but his
team-mates had been great with him, and have not blamed him for the loss.
Club-mate Gary Neville said there is no resentment from any of the players.
Beckham ended saying that he hoped that he'd given another chance in an England shirt. |

Gianluca Pagliuca who's a club team mate of Simeone said that the Argentine was play acting last night when he was kicked by Beckham, an incident which was seen by the referee and resulted in Beckham being shown the red card. Pagliuca was also disappointed with the referee as it appears were many other Italy players. He said, "Nielsen (the referee) made a string of blunders. The penalties given, the one not given to England and a few offside decisions, he made a lot of mistakes, not to mention the sending-off of Beckham." |

Many people are urging fans not to blame David Beckham for England's loss last night in St-Etienne. Brian Robson and Sir Bobby Charlton have both gone to Beckham's defence as have many others. It will be hoped that once Beckham has served his two game bad for England he will be playing at his best and will help England qualify for the European Championship finals in 2000. |

David Beckham,
who was dismissed from last night's game against Argentina for retaliation,
has been fined 2,000 pounds by FIFA and is banned from playing in England's
next two competitive games, which will be the European Championship qualifying
games which start in September.
Today Beckham issued an apology
which read, "This is without doubt the worst moment of my career. I will
always regret my actions during last night's game. I have apologised to
the England
While his action was unprofessional, the nation should not be quick to forget Beckham's skill which helped England into the Second Round of the World Cup. Both his and Owen's introduction into the tournament made a huge difference to England's performance in the last two group games. Hoddle, for one, is able to think of Beckham's talent and said today, "It was a mistake. It was a foolish thing to do, and he has got to realise he can't do that sort of thing at this level of football, but it would be wrong to put the blame on David Beckham's shoulders or anybody's shoulders. It was a mistake but we can't go overboard about it and I'm not looking for someone to blame. If he had have been given a yellow card instead, then people wouldn't today be trying to make him a scapegoat for what happened. I hope they don't do that. He did react in a foolish way but we've got to keep the balance right. He has got a wonderful talent which could really develop over the next few years. Why do we always need a scapegoat in a case like this?" |
