Calculating Statistics

The following is a list of statistics and how to calculate them. If there are any that I have left off, and you would like added, just ask me. Normal text is a description of how to make the calculations. Italics are the mathematical formula that is used.

Batting Average Divide the number of hits by at-bats.
Hits / At-bats
On-Base Percentage Divide hits plus walks plus hit-by-pitch by at-bats plus walks plus hit-by-pitch plus sacrifice flies.
(Hits + Walks + HBPs) / (Walks + HBPs + Sacrifice Flies)
Slugging Percentage Divide the total bases of all hits by the total official at-bats (Single = 1 base, double = 2 bases, triple = 3 bases, home run = 4 bases).
Total Bases / At-bats
Fielding Percentage Divide the total putouts + assists by the total chances (putouts + assists + errors).
(Putouts + Assists) / (Putouts+ Assists + Errors)
Earned Run Average (ERA) Multiply the total earned runs by 9 and divide the result by the total number of innings pitched.
(Earned Runs x 9) / Innings Pitched
Win-Loss Percentage Divide the total number of games won by the total games played.
(Wins / Games Played)
Magic Numbers Compute the number of games remaining, add one, then subtract the number of games ahead in the loss column of the standings of the closest opponent (or, in the case of a trailing team, the leading opponent).
