Music

Up
My tastes in music aren't exactly ecletic, in fact one could say they're somewhat mundane. But then my impressionable years as far as music goes where in the late 70's and early 80's. A friend at the time (hi Pete B) and I listened to what his elder brother was into. Namely Fleetwood Mac, Supertramp, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan, The Eagles.

Going retro for a moment other music around that time was Dire Straits, Chic (remember Le Freak?), Gary Numans Tubeway Army (and the album Replicas), Ultravox, Visage, Blondie, etc.

It's interesting to listen to the current crop of music that has remixed alot of the old stuff e.g Life in a northern town by The Dream Academy was recently in the charts .....

Over the last 5 or so years I've swung into celtic or celtic influenced music. This started pretty much with Clannad when they did the theme music for the television series "Robin Hood". A band visiting from Canada and doing a pu circuit based around Molly Malones in Wellington hooked me and some friends big time. They are Captain Tractor, and I first heard them at a gig with Banshee Reel. At the Wellington Festival of the Arts back in 1998 (or so), another interesting band, Shooglenifty came into my life and gave a great performance at a Danse Palais. They're not Irish, but Scottish and definitely Cletic. Another band from Scotland I've listened to quite a bit over the years is Capercallie.

New Zealand bands/solo artisits that I like to listen to when I get tired of the above are folk like Split Enz (going strong at my place), Dave Dobbyn, Jenny Morris, ..........

Looking around the collection of CD's this is what else would get played Jethro Tull, Jean-Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield, The Molleys, The Blue Nile, Nigel Kennedy, Concrete Blonde, Cold Chisel.
