1988-89: What may have been one of the
greatest college football
teams of all-time did not even win the National Championship. The 1988
Canes were as good and arguably better than the Championship team of a
year ago.
Steve Walsh (pictured right) was back and had a tremendous year. The
season began with a
31-0 humiliation of then #1 Florida State and Deion Sanders in the Orange
Bowl on prime time national television. Two weeks later, Miami rallied
from a 30-14 defecit
with 17 straight points and a 31-30 victory at Ann Arbor over the Michigan
Wolverines.(pictured bottom)
Steve
Walsh led the comeback with over 350 yards
passing, along with great play from
tight-end, Rob Chudzinski and half-back, Cleveland Gary. Freshman
kicker, Carlos Huerta's
field goal ended up winning it for the Canes. The very next week, the
Canes visited QB Tony Rice and #4 Notre Dame. Coach
Johnson
decided to go for 2 points and the victory with 43 seconds left. For the
game, Walsh threw for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns, but it wasn't
enough as the luck of the Irish prevailed, 31-30. That proved to be
Miami's only
loss of the year as the Canes went on to beat undefeated Arkansas, and
then pummel Nebraska 23-3 in the
Orange Bowl. The 11-1 season ended up being Jimmy Johnson's last on the
Canes' sidelines as he moved on to have great success with the NFL's
Dallas
Cowboys.
