1986-87: Miami showed signs of an era
to come. In 1986, Miami won
all 11 of their regular season games. Quarterback, Vinny Testaverde
(pictured right)
became the Cane's first ever Heisman Trophy winner. Miami beat Oklahoma
in a
#1 vs. #2 showdown in Norman. The Canes also took care of inner-state
rival, Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Miami was led by
wide-receivers and future NFL stars, Michael Irvin and Brian Blades. The
Cane's defense was
anchored by Jerome Brown and safetied by Bennie Blades. This was a truly
dominant team and they knew it. Miami went into the
Fiesta Bowl battle with undefeated Penn
State talking trash and wanting to destroy the methodical and somewhat
boring Nittany Lions. It was not to be however, as the Cane's Hollywood
antics led to disaster. Vinny Testaverde threw 5 interceptions and even
though Miami outgained
Penn State by more than double in yardage, the Nittany Lions won the game
and the
national title, 14-10. It was the most dissapointing loss in Miami school
history.
