The Dolphins jumped out to a 9-0 lead by half time and extended it to 19-0 in the 3rd quarter. The Skins made a valiant effort but the Dolphins held them off.
The Dolphins scored on each of their first two possessionns on two field goals by Olindo Mare. The Dolphins drove 70 yards down field the first posession. Marino completed 6 of 7 for 58 yards, not bad for only one possession. The Dolphins second drive was highlited by the Dolphins running game, in which they gained 63 yards, Jabbar gained 25 and Jerris McPhail gained 29. Mare nailed a 50 - yarder with just 20 ticks left on the clock.
The Dolphins stopped the skins on three straight plays to start the second half. Charles Jortdan returned a 53 yard punt to the Skins 15. Then Ray Nealy ran it in from three yards out. Miami got its final points of the contest when Mare nailed a 46 yarder with about four minuites left in the third. Skip Hicks provided Waskington with it's first points of the game. Larry Izzo sacked Hostetler on the two point attempt. Following the Redskins next offensive series, Sam Madisonintercepted a Trent Green pass, but fumbled the ball, and Thomas recovered it back to the Dolphins three. This lead to a 3-yard TD pass from Green to Albert with about one to go. Washington could not connect the ensuing on side kick.
