PLAYOFF HOPES CRUSHED!
BUCCANEERS DEFLATE STEELERS 16-3!

MAD FAN

Here is the situation. Patriots lose their last 2, Oilers lose their last 2, Steelers win their last 2, and we're in for some post-season action.

And monkeys might fly out of my butt!

Sundays Steeler game was more than an offense in a slump. It was downright embarrassing. The touchdown slump is reaching epic proportions, and I don't think the coaching staff has any answers. The last end zone dance happened in the 3rd quarter at Detroit. It was a lucky touchdown at that. It was the pass that deflected off of Bettis into the waiting hands of Will Blackwell. I'm sure if Sherman knew how that play worked, he would have used it again in the past 2 games. Unfortunately, they can't find anything that works.

As I stated last week, this team is in desperate need of a big play receiver. Until that happens, this is a team destined for mediocrity. I hear that Carl Pickens wants out of Cincinnati. He would look very good in a Steeler uniform. I'm sure Kordell would love to have someone to throw the ball to that can get open deep. The way the league is now, long sustained drives can't happen the way they used to for the Steelers. Too many teams are stacking the line of scrimmage, and a power runner such as Bettis does not have the break away speed that is necessary for the big play. I'm not saying the Bus is the problem, just that he can't function without a deep threat to force the defenders to stay off the line.

The most upsetting thing about Sundays game, is that the Defense once again was outstanding. For a team that seemed to be on the field the whole day, they only gave up 3 field goals and 1 seven yard scoring drive. This unit has performed remarkably all year, (with the exception of the first Tennessee game) and have nothing to show for it. I hope this doesn't lead to dissension between the two units. It's something I hope Cowher can diffuse before it even surfaces. It's a shame though, because the Defense is definitely Superbowl caliber. If the Offense could have held up their part of the bargain, we would be anxiously awaiting the start of post season.

As it is, we have two meaningless game to go through before it's back to work for another year. I would expect to see more of Chris Conrad, and Jeremy Statt the rest of the way. If these guys are part of the future, it would be nice to see how they perform. Kordell should flourish the next two weeks as well. For the first time in while he will be playing without any pressure to carry the team on his back. Hopefully it will help him regain his confidence.

The last six years have been very good. I have hopes that the next six will be even better.
