1996 - 97 Champions Again
This Season will be best remembered for being so near in the Champions League. United won the league by keeping up the pressure with long time leaders Liverpool.
Liverpool were leading the table from day one, United meanwhile had a slow start in the season, with 5-0 trashing at the hands of Newcastle, where a certain David Ginola tore Uinted apart with a goal and four great assists. Next week came the unbelieveable defeat of 6-3 at the hands of Southampton! Egil Ostenstad and Eyal Berkovic simply tore United apart, just like what Ginola did. The rot ended at the 1-0 home win against Arsenal.
United kept up the pressure from then on and maintain their form. A 3-1 win against Liverpool at Anfield took United to pole position. The title was won when Liverpool lost at Wimbledon, gave Uinted an unaccessable lead.
United did well in Europe with them finishing second in their group behind Juventus. A 43 year unbeaten record at Old Trafford was broken when Bersiktas won 1-0 there in the group games. United met Porto in the Quarter Finals and trashed them 4-0over two legs. Borussia Dortmund was the semi-final opponent. United played well but was unfortunate to lose both legs 1-0. Dortmind went on to beat Juventus in the final.
