I woke up, it was raining, back to sleep. Woke again, still raining, back to sleep. And so on until just after 10am when the rain had dropped to a light, intermittent, drizzle. I couldn't lie in bed any longer, so I slowly started packing and eventually ventured out of my tent. Brrrrr. Fortunately the rain had pretty much stopped and actually had one beneficial effect, the sand I had been riding through yesterday had firmed up and some of the sand had flowed into some of the ruts that had developed in the road. So I actually made pretty good time. I had a few problems with one of my front panniers dropping off but I made adjustments and eventually got the problem under control. I only had to stop a couple of time for vehicles, but the wind made stopping very cold. You don't notice it when you're riding because you're working too hard, but when you stop, my it was cold. I finally got the end of the gravel and boy what a fine sense of achievement that was, riding was so much easier now, it felt like I was literally flying down the road. The rain had stopped and I was off the gravel, perfect.
Even with all these things going for me I decide to stay in a Youth Hostel, YHA. There are hostels all over Iceland and I felt that after how hard the gravel roads had been that I needed a good nights rest.
Woke up feeling sick, sore throat and a bad cough, decided to spend a day here and see if I recovered. I still had some medication left over which I had brought with me for the Raid so I took some throat lozenges and went back to sleep. I eventually got up and had a leisurely breakfast. The advantage of being in a town is that they have shops so I was able to get some museli and yogurt, bread with some Gouda and a tomato.
