I have a little bit of advice for newly separated TV actress Sophia Bush: thank your lucky stars that you didn't marry ABBA's Bjorn Ulvaeus.
Bush plays a perky brunette cheerleader on the TV soap One Tree Hill - a sort of poor man's OC, but with more basketball and less anorexia. Last April, Bush married her One Tree Hill on-screen boyfriend, Chad Michael Murray. A mere five months later they announced their separation. Not that I'm judging them. One of my best friends married in Las Vegas in 1999 wearing baggy shorts, an old T-shirt and a floppy sunhat and just three months later she could be found storing her divorce papers in the dairy compartment of the fridge. But she didn't have to keep working with her ex, unlike Ms Bush who not only has to work with her ex-husband every day on the show, but also has to continue playing his love interest. Pucker up. Which brings me back to ABBA and why Bush should be glad she didn't marry the one without the beard - Bjorn Ulvaeus. ABBA consisted of two married couples: the bloke with the beard (Benny) and the chick with the brown hair (Anna-Frid) and the dude without the beard who looked a bit like a monkey (Bjorn) and a blonde who looked like Barbie on a bad acid trip (Agnetha). When Bjorn and Agnetha broke up in 1978, not only did they have to continue performing together, but Bjorn - sticking the boot in - wrote Agnetha a depressing song about the break-up, and then made her sing it. The Winner Takes It All features such lines as "But tell me does she kiss, like I used to kiss you?" and was particularly stinging considering Bjorn had a new partner by then. The ditty was his attempt to write from Agnetha's point of view about what it's like to watch an ex move on - proving that Bjorn is about as subtle as haemorrhoids. Keeping with the world of music, rock diva Gwen Stefani dated No Doubt band member, bassist Tony Kanal, for seven years and when they split in 1996, they too had to continue performing together. Somehow Stefani managed to write and sing about the pain of the break-up in songs like Sunday Morning and Don't Speak and last year Stefani, who is now married to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, released Cool - a song showing the changing nature of her friendship with Kanal. Another star who is happy to gush about the joys of working with an ex is Alias actress Jennifer Garner. These days Garner is married to Ben Affleck, but before becoming Bennifer The Sequel, Garner dated her Alias co-star Michael Vartan who plays her love interest on the hit series. In a recent interview, this is what Garner had to say about working with her old flame: "We've always separated work from what was happening between us personally, so it never felt enmeshed. We were talking today about how lucky we are that we are such good friends and what a nightmare this year could've been if we weren't. There have been moments where it's weird, of course. But we have been such good friends for so long that we are going fine with it because we love working together." Which is clearly PR speak for: "I have a restraining order against him. And he smells like feet." Back home in Oz, the couple to cause the biggest scandal last year had to be the chippie and the showgirl. Dancing With the Stars couple Tom Williams and Kym Johnstone blamed it on the boogie when they started to rumba off-screen as well as on. Sadly the pair lasted only five months, announcing their split in early November just weeks before having to reunite and shake their groove things together for a Dancing With the Stars Dance-Off. They've described their split as amicable. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for One Tree Hill's Bush and Murray. Things are less than peachy between the pair with rumours circulating that Murray cheated on his new wife soon after saying, "I do". After all, a bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush. |
